A group of fun-loving teenagers take jobs at a recently re-opened summer camp, unaware of the circumstances that had led to its closure: the drowning of a young boy named Jason and subsequent murder of two counsellors over twenty years before. No sooner has the camp re-opened for business than the killing begins again, as the teens are picked off one by one. Followed by seven sequels.

A movie transformed by time (and a dark remaster)
{Note: Amazon 's system seems to have combined the reviews for the 1980 'Friday the 13th' and the 2009 film, so just in case: I'm reviewing the 1980 original.}Back in the day this was considered a "gory shocker" (to quote TV Guide), but decades later 'Friday the 13th' actually comes off like a slow-burn thriller, and its ending generates actual pathos. The acting still sucks and all the fade-to-whites are cheesy, but by complete accident this has become a more "legit" movie than ever intended. To my surprise, Paramount's remastered this and even given it a new trailer ("The one that started it all," it says). I'm not sure what prompted putting such work into this movie now exactly (anniversary, I suppose). The only issue is they've made an already really dark image EVEN DARKER in what I guess is an attempt at making it scarier to modern eyes and perhaps to hide some of the more wonky effects work. They've gone a little too far, I think, and you're probably going to have to turn up the brightness on your screen or watch it inside a cave just to be able to see everything in the night scenes, especially at the end.

Good Movie
In a world of slasher movies where you're often suspicious whether someone's recommending a movie because it's a good movie, or just because there's sex and blood, Friday the 13th is a good movie. You follow a crew of hapless young people at a summer camp. During the night scary things begin to happen. It seems there's a killer out there, and our young people are getting picked off one by one. Who will make it out alive?Friday the 13th was originally a cash-in after the success of Halloween. But Friday the 13th has a great twist on the genre, and I won't spoil it if you're going back and seeing it for the first time. Suffice to say, the idea that the iconic Jason Voorhees has always been the killing machine in popular culture is far from accurate. This movie is deeper, more nuanced, and quite unusual. The acting is quite good, the effects are amazing. It's a good movie.Friday the 13th also explains the origin of a lot of modern slasher movie tropes. In short, slasher movies weren't supposed to be about murdering people while they were having sex just for cheap thrills (put that "just" in quotes). There is an actual story reason why people who are having sex at the summer camp get targeted. This logic starts to fade in the sequels, but here in the original, all of the killing more or less has an explanation. This is more of a dramatic film with slasher elements, than a regular dumb slasher.Tom Savini's effects are magnificent. The film had to quick-cut a lot of the gruesome kills to avoid ratings issues, but what is there is just enough to surprise. At the time, the combination of violent kills and sexual imagery was thought by critics to be in poor taste. Here, I think the film is perfectly artistic and justified thanks to its story. It's not until later installments that I really begin to question the morality of the filmmakers.Harry Manfredini's iconic score is a wonder. Equal parts classic movie score, with lots of strings, and a modern horror masterpiece with lots of editing and effects. The classic sound effect of "chu chu chu, ha ha ha" is actually related to the story. Again I'll limit spoilers, but the actual audio is a heavily distorted clip of the beginning sounds of "kill" and "mommy". Everything has a reason, and it's all amazing.Great music, great effects, good to great acting. I'd recommend this movie even if people hate modern slasher films. It's so much smarter, more nuanced, and a "real" movie. Whether you love or hate later installments, Friday the 13th is a classic in its own right.

A true classic
A real classic, but amazingly tame. Yes, there are deaths, but there is not a massive splatter of blood and the killer is shown in shadows for most of the movie. Even though there are hormone filled teen counselors, there is not gratuitous nudity. On Prime, I plan to watch the sequels, to see if they lose what made this movie a classic. With a bigger budget and modern special effects but using the same script, this could be a âkillerâ movie. But it would also lose what made this movie special. The camp certainly has a real rustic look. And no spoilers in this review.

One of the foundations of the serial killer flicks in the 70s-80s
The 1970s/early-1980s were the heyday of serial killer horror flicks. In 1974 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre came out with Leatherface. In 1978 John Carpenter released Halloween with Michael Myers. 1984âs A Nightmare on Elm Street featured Freddy Krueger. Then there was Friday the 13th with Jason. In true slasher fashion Jason preyed on young people, especially ones that were thinking about or having sex. He was in luck because he found a bunch of them at Camp Crystal Lake.Whatâs interesting about the original Friday the 13th is that the killer is able to walk up on victims and kill them. The first two were trying to have sex and apologized when the killer first saw them. The third was picked up as a hitch hiker. Thatâs important to know because in the subsequent movies Jason always wore a hokey mask. Itâs also a hint at the twist at the end.If you like slasher movies you have to watch the first Friday the 13th as it helped set a standard in horror flicks that is still felt today.C

These reviews are confusing
Amazon seems to be mixing reviews for the original Friday the 13th with the remake. I've never seen the remake. The original is a classic. It's such a classic that we should have stopped making slasher movies after it, because it can't be topped.

Jason Returns To Camp Blood.
Friday The 13th (2009).Certificate: 18.Running Time 106 Minutes (Unrated Cut).Trivia.1) Including the 2009 remake, Jason has killed 167 total people throughout the "Friday the 13th" series.2) Clay & Whitney's last name is Miller. This is a reference to Victor Miller, the creator of the Friday the 13th (1980) series.3) The first time Paramount has any association with the "Friday the 13th" series since 1989.4) This is director Marcus Nispel's second remake the first was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), which was also produced by the company Platinum Dunes.5) Body count 14 (13 of which are killed by Jason).Synopsis.A group of young adults on a weekend vacation discover a boarded up Camp Crystal Lake, where they soon encounter psychopath killer Jason Voorhees.Timelord Thoughts.Well the horror remake bandwagon continues with a remake of one of my favourite horror movie franchises 'Friday The 13th' but how does this remake compare to the others movies in the series? The end result is a bog standard horror remake that has a few decent gory kills but lacks the scare factor of the earlier Friday movies. So first the positives, Derek Mears is a excellent Jason Voorhees who actually makes the character menacing again, like Kane Hodders Jason before him Mears gives the character a brutality & a scariness as he stalks & sets traps for his victims killing them in some brutal kills that are far bloodier in the unrated cut & the new look Jason works well & merges the iconic sack/hockey mask into a terrifying looking bad ass.Supernatural's Sam Winchester actor Jared Padalecki gives a decent performance & takes the lead as Clay Miller who's searching for his missing sister Whitney who Jason has kidnapped played competently by actress Amanda Righetti.Anyone looking for gratuitous nudity will be happy as the movie features two sex scenes with boobilicious babes *were talking some seriously fit looking ladys here) & the ole clichés of lets smoke dope, get drunk & have pre-martial sex are all present & correct. But what let's this movie down is Jason's backstory, Freddy Vs Jason writers Damian Shannon & Mark Swift completely skips over Jason's relationship with his mother which isn't fleshed out at all because Mrs Voorhees is quickly beheaded during the opening credits so we discover nothing whatsoever about her relationship with her son which would've benefited this remake by adding something new, all we get is a scene were a young Jason appears to find his mum's decapitated head & then simply vanishes into the woods of Crystal Lake.Supporting characters go from being likeable, The Flash's Danielle Panabaker gives a ok performance as Jenna but isn't given much screen time so it's hard to form a opinion on her while Travis Van Winkle can't act his way out of a paper bag & plays the unlikeable Trent, the movies character we love to loathe & who made me want to punch the screen everytime he appeared but at least he gets the movie's best death scene (unrated cut version is even gorier). But my biggest gripe about this remake is that it's just not scary & is simply a by the numbers remake from director Marcus Nispel who I thought would've added more suspense & drama to the mix like he did so wonderfully in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, the movies tone is faithful to what's gone before it just lacks any build up of tension, features too many jump scares & sorely lacks atmosphere thanks in part to a very weak music score. I think it would be a interesting experiment to watch a version of this film with a Harry Manfredini score reinserted to key scenes to see if it ramps up the scare factor any?The blu ray transfer is sharp, strong colours are well defined & no grain presented in a 2.40:1 ratio. The audio English: Dolby True HD 5.1 delivers a excellent atmospheric clear sound while subtitles included are English, English SDH, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish & the featurettes included alternative scenes & behind the scenes + interviews from the cast about making the movie.Overall then 'Friday The 13th 2009' remake does what it says on the tin, the characters are typical cliché adolescents, the plots virtually the same as the previous entries & the ending rips off the original but fails to shock or scare like the original movie climax did & as such the movie is just another average horror remake.

The remake leaves a lot to be desired.
If you want Friday the 13th movies then stick with the orthogonal ones. For me the remake did not work.

Contains the most realistic film killing EVER!!
Ok, I might be biased towards liking this film as I've been a huge fan of the whole franchise since I saw the original 30 years ago, which has lived with me ever since because of one of the most scariest and unexpected endings in cinematic history. This is the first film I've bought on Blu-Ray and although on my TV the picture looks the same as my upscaling DVD player, the sound quality is slightly superior.Friday the 13th has always been a slasher flick, the plot lines have always been poor to average, and as with the other films in the franchise, you tend to just fast forward to the killings as a lot of the film is taken up with getting to know the characters and plot, but if they're all going to die anyhow, then why bother. What I like about this version is the fact that the opening 20 minutes are arguably better than the final 20 minutes. You have to settle down and catch your breath before witnessing Jasons rampage all over again. And as stated in the title, no other film has captured a death sequence with such chilling accuracy as this. I squirm every time I see it. I kid you not it could have been actual footage. It's the one on the water walkway. The extras are what you'd expect, yet I've just bought "His name Was Jason", which should satisfy every die hard fan.I also have this film on DVD. As this is the extended cut, there is more footage, yet, for me this gives the film a diservice as it just extends the dialogue and the film suffers for it. They could easily have put this extra footage in the extras and kept the film tight as in its original form.My only gripe about the film is the ending. It was sold as being a compilation of parts 1-3, and without spoiling the ending all I would say is " Why the mask?". That was a missed opportunity to have real impact like the original version.Although the original in todays world might not be as shocking to view as back then, I still recommend it to see how slasher flick horror film franchises began 30 years ago.
