Nope, hard plastic. Just arrived today. It’s a kids toy so it’s not resiliently hard plastic.

Does it have a strap on the back?

Yes, two straps parallel to each other are on the back. They are adjustable elastic.

Would this be good for a ren fest?

I've worked at Ren Faires. They are only picky when it comes to the actors dressing authentically and usually the vendors needs to get as close as they can. Faire goers... you can dress up in anything you want to, including Link (we've had DC and Marvel characters come through). It's the SCA participation that requires dressing in strict period costumes. For added fun, get into character, you are a visitor, from far off kingdom- the actors, some of the merchants, and other faire goers will role play along- Just don't break our merchandise, we will act medieval on ya ;)
