I am trying to upgrade dell inspiron 1440 to 8 gb...it has latest bios...will two of these work for that?

If the DDR number in the Dell Inspiron 1440 specifications (spec) matches the DDR in the memory sticks, then it works. Be aware there are DDR2 and DDR3.
