Kenny!
I had been searching for this album for quite a while. My only copy was a worn out cassette tape. I was so pleased to find it on CD.

His 8th Solo Album Was A Cross-Over Winner In 1980
Released in 1980, this 8th album by Kenny Rogers (as a solo artist) came out as United Artists LOO-1035 and, as a concept compilation dealing with Texas cowboy Gideon Tanner, not only reached # 1 on Billboard's Country Album charts, but # 12 as well on the Pop Top 200. In addition, it produced the # 2 Adult Contemporary (AC), # 3 County and # 4 Billboard Pop Hot 100 single, Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer, a duet with Kim Carnes, as United Artists 1345, peaking in April/May 1980. On the flip, Goin' Home To The Rock (which opens and closes the album), Kenny starts the story about Gideon, who is clearly deceased. It's notable, too, that Kim Carnes, who produced the album, also wrote all the songs but one with husband Dave Ellingson, and that exception, Somebody Help Me, was penned by Ellingson on his own. UA would also use the tracks Sayin' Goodbye/Requiem: Goin' Home To The Rock, as the flip of his follow-up hit single, Love The World Away (from the film Urban Cowboy), a # 4 Country, # 8 AC and # 14 Hot 100 in July 1980 as United Artists 1359.The tracks are: A1. Goin' Home To The Rock (Intro) (0:40); A2. Gideon Tanner (2:34); A3. No Good Texas Rounder (4:11); A4. Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer" (3:39); A5. The Buckeroos (3:18); A6. You Were A Good Friend (3:53); B1. Call Me Up (The Phone Is In The Cradle) (3:17); B2. These Chains (3:22); B3. Somebody Help Me (2:51); B4. One Place In The Night (2:59); B5. Sayin' Goodbye (3:25); B6. Requiem: Goin' Home To The Rock (0:58).

Gideon - Kenny's best concept album!
This is Kenny's absolute best concept album, hands down! I once had this title on an 8-track cartridge tape, and completely wore it out from repeated and constant playback so many times. Thank heavens I recently found it on CD. However, it was quite costly, but it was more than well worth it. I love all of Kenny Rogers' songs, but the "Gideon" album is my favorite of his albums. I'd like to start a blog or website about KR's music, and this album particularly! I just never tire of listening to the whole album. Kenny's music, to me, is more than just music. This record is a way of life!

i didn't know how many people consider this kenny's best
Kenny Rogers came out with this in 1980 his first album after The Gambler. When I listened to it the first time after the first 4 songs I kept waiting for it to get better. Then the 5th song The Buckeroos is a good song. Then I waited some more. Then the 9th song Somebody Help Me came on and it was a good song. To me those are the only songs I like. This is the rock bottom of Kenny Rogers solo albums. I'm glad that it came out on cd. Because I will listen to it every once in a while and I would rather have the cd then the record. And I got the Razor and Tie import cd. Now will somebody please release Love Is What We Make It on cd.

a rare gem
I've been listenning to this album on record ever since I was a kid, and I've always loved it. The story of the character Gideon Tanner is told through the music and the music is great. "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer" is here, and I believe this is where it first appeared. Other good selections include "Call Me Up (The Phone Is In The Cradle)" and my favorite, "The Buckeroos". I just recently found this on CD and while it was costly, it was worth the money for this rare gem. I would have paid much more if necessary. If you have this on LP or cassette and want to upgrade to CD, scour the net and maybe you'll get lucky. Beware of fakes, my copy is completely legitimate. If you haven't ever heard it, find it used on cassette or LP if you can to give it a listen.

Kenny Rogers - Gideon
This is one of the best Kenny Rogers albums around. I bought this on 8-track many years ago and have been trying to find it on cd ever since. Every song is a hit. I would play this over and over and never tire of the songs.

My favourite Kenny Rogers album
It's a fantastic album. Simply fantastic. Kennys voice never sounded better and he seems at home in the "western" setting.I haven't been able to find it on CD - and my tape is soon worn out. :-(
