These Boots Were Made for Stomping
So...mistakes were made. Turns out it isn't a great idea to burn all the fallen sticks I collected over the previous spring and summer in a small burn pit. It didnt help that it was a windy day and the grass was still discolored from the snow. See the first picture. The fire was about to get out of hand. When I first noticed the fire outside of the pit the fire was raging. So much that it flared up with the wind and singed my eyelashes and eyebrows. Thankfully, my contact lenses didn't fuse to my eyes. So with no water, no fire blankets, and no maidens to help me kill this fire I did the first thing that came to mind, stomping the fire. I stomped the fire with these jungle boots and they did the job very well. My boots didn't melt or have any damage on them afterwards. They did feel mildly hot after stomping out the fire. Overall great boots that saved me the akwardness of being "that guy" the burned down his village. 10/10 would recommend ๐

Size claims
I received these yesterday and because they seem a little too large, I will wear them around the house for a while. Looking at my Sketcher shoe sizes which are size 12 W, I first ordered these 12 wide. Way too big. I felt like a clown and tripped several times with them on. So, I returned them and ordered theses 11 W. Still they seem to be a tad too large but I will keep them for now. Next time I will first try the 10 W or 10 1/2 W if available. No matter, they must be the wide size. NOTE: I retired from the Air Force and the last few years of my career, I wore these kinds of boots. I really like the style, BUT, these ARE NOT the real thing, far from it. The real ones would cost much more, would be triple threaded on the seams, and have the official U.S. tag in them. None the less, these will do. I will keep them. I had to put foam padding in side as these are as hard as bricks to your foot. If you don't, good luck. Since putting double strips of padding in mine, it makes them now feel something like the real thing. Much of comfortable.

Good quality control makes a big difference.
I tempered my judgement of size expectations based on the knowledge that feet get a bit wider as we age. Wipe that smirk off your face, you ain't getting any younger. Way back, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I was a consistent 8W or 9R so I ordered the 8W and they are a bit tight in width. I have confidence that these will stretch enough to be truly comfortable. This is only minor and proper jungle boot first-wearing and break-in procedures have prevented any serious soreness. First serious wearing fill the boots with fresh water, allow to drain through the drain holes slowly for several minutes, dump the excess, put them on laced tighter than normal, go for a long walk. If you take them off and they are still moist, remove any insoles so they can dry. After wearing wet, use a good shoe polish as this nourishes the leather and helps prevent cracking. A light smear of neatsfoot oil is the gold standard for keeping leather soft but don't use too much or too often as it can become an oily mess or stretch too much. Never use any heat more powerful than sunlight to dry them. Hint: These units have no insoles so form-fitted cushion insoles are a good idea for dry conditions and hiking on hard surfaces. Insoles with stiff plastic blades help with arch support. If you are going to be in a lot of water it pays to find a pair of Saran mesh insoles. They maintain an air-gap and help drain the water so the boots and feet dry quickly. Surplus Army Warehouse sells them by the dozen cheap as "GI Insoles 8R 12 Pairs". They are not designed to add cushioning, just to get air under the foot to aid air circulation and prevent rot. Original GI issue boots in the 70s and 80s, jungle and regular, came with these "shredded wheat" insoles. They help a lot in any boot if it is hot or wet. Note on quality: Of three manufacturers of these boots I have experience with the Rothco version seems far superior. The quality of materials is nearly identical from all manufacturers. As far as I know they could all be manufactured in the same plant and they look the same. The differences are mainly a matter of quality control inspection and rejecting items with small but serious flaws. A set of "Mil-spec" boots I bought from SG is typical. The left boot is well put together and seemingly quite durable. The right had the heel come unattached after a very few miles of light walking. Same materials, perhaps the Rothco sole is a bit better moulding and it sports a brand impression, but the non-Rothco boots are hit-or-miss on how they are put together. If you are lucky you get a good boot. If not ... Note that the difference is not necessarily easy to spot. The defective heel joint on the "Mil-spec" SG boot was smeared with some sort of black caulk to disguise the loose joint and looked only a bit sloppy, but otherwise okay. Six miles of light walking later and a quarter-inch gap had opened up and the heel was starting to flap. Live and learn. Along that same line the Rothco boots seams at the sole look tight and neat, a good sign, but I will only know for sure in time. After a dozen miles they are still solid. Jungle boots are not for everyone. The soles are thinner and more flexible than most boots. They are a more than adequate 5/16" at their thinnest but feel more like athletic shoes than boots. There are also 9 eyelets on each side. Next time I might swing for the speed-laces.

Decent boot for insanely wide feet but corners were cut during manufacturing
If you have feet that measure wider than the "4E" option many companies offer this boot does a pretty good job of handling your flippers. I measure from toe to heel as an 10.5 or 11 US but constantly have to buy 2 or 3 sizes higher just to accommodate the width. 13 wide worked for me. It is a little long in the toe and I probably could have gotten away with a 12.5 wide but it isn't offered. Either way, the construction of the boot is overall very good. The boots do have the updated "Panama" sole making it easier to slick mud out of the grooves by stomping on hard ground or with a stick. If you aren't familiar with Vietnam era Jungle boots, these are not water proof. Instead they feature a drain grommet in the sides that will push water out with every step. If you intend to use these for hiking or rucking be sure to pair these with quick drying socks. They also do NOT come with any sort of insole so you will have to add your own, which in my case is a benefit considering the price of the boots is low and I usually toss the pair of insoles for my favorites either way. The most unforgivably lazy manufacting practice in this boot is the lack of washer backings in the eyelets. From the factory, both boots simply had their eyelet grommets folded into themselves with the press dye. This leaves an unfinished, sharp metal surface friction fit into the leather holes, which will pop out easily when the laces are tightened. After 3 months of use they frayed the included boot laces. Since the other aspects of the boot met my standards I opted to replace the eyelets entirely myself, (Pictured on the left boot, right boot still has the OEM eyelets). Additionally none of the exposed leather surfaces have been treated with a tragacanth gum and those ends will fray after a few uses. I would like to give these boots at least 4 stars for their price and fit, however I actually am using these in a jungle setting and need them to stand up to at least 6 months of work prior to replacement. If you are even the slightest bit handy you can replace and treat the issues with this boot yourself.

Absolutely fantastic boots - but old school
So to be clear, these are fantastic boots and there is a reason they stayed in services for 40 years (or so). Once broken in, they are wonderfully comfortable. The ability to walk out moisture is great, and the ankle support when crossing rocky ground with a load is excellent. They are built true to spec, and no different than the military issue ones from the past. Exactly the same on the inside too. Now keep in mind, you'll need to break them in. A lot. Do not skip this step or you'll have blisters the size of Texas on your tootsies. While modern boots (like my Solomans) are almost as comfortable as sneakers the day you buy them, these need more love become comfortable. And it will take a while to break them in, no skipping that. They are old school and the leather starts much like plastic. But once broken in they will last years. The panama soles work as designed. I just came back from traipsing around in the mud (pouring rain, cold day, mud up to my ankles) and the mud just fell out of the treads as I walked. I was carrying a load and the ankle support was nice too.

Failed
I've owned these in the past. I had a lot of back pain in the past, but not lately (last 5 or 6 years). I wondered if the back pain could be related to these boots. My last set of boots (not these jungle boots) wore out too quickly and cost 3 times as much as these. So i bought another set of these jungle boots but this time i also bought a set of inserts for them. Superfeet Black Premium Insoles Without the inserts, i was standing on concrete talking with a friend and starting to get back pain that reminded me of pain in years past. after i bought the insert things are much better. Although the inserts were more than the boots, both together are still much cheaper than the last non-jungle boots i owned. The jungle boots will last much longer too. ------------------------UPDATE---------------------------------------------------- It's only July and i have worn these out. There is a split through the bottom. I mentioned that i've owned these in the past (above), but these are clearly not the same boots i used when i was in the military. They do look like the exact boots, but don't last anything like the originals. If they were the same boots, they would have lasted years not 4 months. I can't blame heavy usage for why these failed so quickly. I'm a computer tech, not a construction worker (which i've been in the past). My job wouldn't wear these out so fast. Another detail about the usage of these boots, is that half of my time i'm usually wearing sandals. i only wear these boots when i work (4 days a week). So long story short, these have to be made of very low quality material. For those that care to know, you don't quite get what you pay for with these. $27 is cheap, but you'd expect at least a year for cheap boots. I don't recommend anybody buying these.

Good Value/Budget Boots
I bought these for my 13 year old to wear in LOTC this year. Kids grow so fast, and their interests change so quicklyโฆI wasnโt trying to spend $150 on a pair of boots just yet. And these will do nicely! Theyโre lightweight, come in a nice wide range of sizes, and my son says theyโre comfortable. Theyโre not top quality, okay. If youโre really wearing them hard - long ruck marches on uneven terrain, that sort of thing - they may not be what youโre looking for. But for style/uniform compliance without breaking the bank, theyโre perfect. Sizing is weird. I recommend actually measuring your foot and going by the provided size guide. Thatโs what we did and we got it right on the first try.

Good Enough & Worth it.
They work. These aren't my dad's combat boots with protection against punji sticks and the tread wears down faster, but I'm glad I bought them and I'm buying a second pair. Used the last ones for a year and I've been hard on them working in the sand, mud and trapesing around the continents. Don't use the heels to dig out roots, or the tread starts to separate from the heel eventually, but a little black auto trim adhesive fixes that. Still using the ones I have as work boots, they pump out water when you get too deep, but keep it out if you're not above the leather. These have a few years left in them. Using the next pair for "dress" boots. Super comfortable and fit a wide foot. I wear an 8.5 EEE and have a really hard time finding shoes that fit. Normally settle for a 9 EE, but these do run slightly large. The size 8W fits me perfect. Can wear all day long, with normal socks. They aren't too hot, decent construction and for the price, you can't beat them.

Not worth the price and it's uncomfortable as hell
It's like wearing a piece of loose cardboard between your feet.. tried to wear it a few times to get used to it but unfortunately it just isn't it for me... Your better off buying Merrells cause it's at least more cheaper and more well respected among the hiking community in contrast to these boots.. Rothco on its own is pretty hated for it's low quality gear and I can't agree more with those who dislike it..
