I have been using Ion hair dye for nearly a decade. I've used several different black dyes, but Ion is the only at home hair color that I have used that gives me a natural look. Other black dyes make it appear as though I am wearing a wig. Ion also gives my hair a nice shine and healthy appearance. Other dyes have actually damaged my hair, but not Ion. The color is long lasting. It starts to dull after 3 months. For me, it takes 6 months for the dye to fade out. So if you are wanting to change your hair color from black, you should be able to safely after 6 months, from my experience. I have been able to successfully strip the dye after the 6 month mark to then dye lighter. Like purple, green, red, blue, even grey.

I have been using this dye for many months now. It leaves my hair super black for a long time. If it gets on my skin, it's easy to get off with water. I haven't had to worry about a stain on my skin after coloring. Some marks are a little more difficult to get off if they stay on for the whole process, but still come of fairly easily with water and a rag/towel.The process I do that has made it last longer was:• Wash my un-dyed hair with shampoo only before coloring (no conditioner for this one)• Wait 24 hours from last hair wash to color (My hair gets oily fast, so 48 hours is too long for me). The oils help lessen the damage to your hair but too much oil has been a problem for me.• After I dye, rinse with cold water til the water runs clear and use the ION color sealer (this stuff genuinely works. You can use it a couple times a week after you dye too). I do not use shampoo or conditioner on this step so the color can settle in.• Wait 48 hours to wash hair again and wash every other day after that. This is when you can use conditioner again.When I started doing that I saw a big difference. Of course, make sure you tailor it to your hair type, but this is what's worked for me.The nice thing about this dye is that while it does make a little color come out during shampooing for some washes, it doesn't stain anything and doesn't run with just water. That means if it rains you won't have to worry! It doesn't get on my clothes at all if it gets wet like temporary colors.

if you’re looking for a good quality, long lasting, and reliable hair dye, CHOOSE ION!!! i’ve been using ion hair dye for years and every time i do it comes out amazing! and you can get super messy with it and it comes off of skin with just one shower (black and red dye can leave a tiny bit of stains on skin but other colors i’ve found do not) it always (almost) completely washes off my face, ears, and neck. and my hair went from a light brown to jet black in only like an hours and a half. ion hair dye is always so true to color and it lasts a long time (especially black) also any brand of developer works good with this, you don’t need to buy ion developer. anyways yeah, buy ion, don’t choose the other brands 🙌 (not sponsored lmao)

I wish I could rate this below one star. I got The black dye, with ION developer for sensitive scalps, because it said PPD free. It says it's for sensitive scalps, my entire head got a chemical burn. I could only take this photo with my hand to show part of the excruciating pain. I thought I put up this review before, but it's been 3 weeks now and I'm still dealing with it, my scalp is still not healed, still experience a burn on many parts of my scalp, with the worst being at the bottom of my scalp to the base of my neck, and my scalp is itchy, I have flakes now that I didn't have before. I've had to order so many products to get this to go away and I'm told it just takes time. I wouldn't recommend this product to anybody

I love how easy to apply this product is (I used jet black). It is thick enough to not run in application, even with liquid developer (do not forget the developer, I used 20vol in a 1:1 ratio). It removes very easily from skin with an alcohol wipe, but be careful using those on your face because it can cause some pretty painful breakouts. There was enough in the tube, with the added developer to cover my whole head with some left over in the bowl (the blonde piece is intentional) and my hair is about shoulder length at its longest pieces. The color is very much pigmented and is giving the intense goth abyss color I was going for (Raven by Manic Panic turned green after a handful of washes, Transylvania by Arctic Fox washed out entirely in a week, and so I gave up on semipermanent direct dyes for my hair goals). This dye is the darkest black dye I've used and I'm obsessed with it. My only issue is that while washing it out, it stained my blonde hair a bit. I ordered a color remover by Punky Color to strip these blue tones out but I'm worried about it's effectiveness because it is a permanent dye. My shower wasn't stained and it didn't even leave dye marks on my towel after the first wash. Over all it's a very good dye but be EXTRA CAREFUL if you want some parts of your hair undyed. You'll probably need help washing the dye out in that case! I hope this helps someone~

I’ve tried a lot of at-home black hair dyes, and Ion’s 1V Jet Black is hands down one of the best. The color comes out rich, glossy, and truly jet black, not flat or blue-tinted like some others. I love that it’s vegan, cruelty free, and PPD free, which makes it much gentler on my scalp. It has great gray coverage and lasts much longer than I expected—my color still looks fresh even after several washes. Definitely recommend pairing it with the Ion developer for the best results.

I decided to try this hair dye after being reassured by its claim of being PPD-free, as I have a known sensitivity to PPD. Unfortunately, during the patch test, I experienced skin rashes and irritation—exactly the kind of reaction I was hoping to avoid.This raises serious concerns: either the product is not genuinely PPD-free, or it contains another equally harmful chemical causing similar reactions. The whole point of purchasing a product labeled "PPD-free" is to avoid such issues, and this one completely failed to deliver on its promise.If you have sensitive skin or chemical allergies, I’d recommend being cautious with this product. For me, this was a disappointing and frustrating experience. Transparency about ingredients is critical, and this product left me with more questions than trust.
