I'm not sure how smooth it is! I would say it is like the sheet on your bed. It has a little texture but not much. Hope this helps...

is this treated or just raw stainless steel?

Greetings. It is not raw steel, it is treated. This is a very fine mesh. Almost sold in consistency. It does not feel at all like metal because it's so fine. I originally was going to use it to repair window screens, but it's too fine for that. It appears almost as a solid 'fabric' of treated very fine, mesh steel. I use it as an intake filter for my portable AC units. It's quite effective. I hope this helps ya!
