One Flash!: Great Photography with Just One Light
B**Y
Best Lighting Book I Have Seen So Far!
Thus is a killer quality book with tons of examples that show what the photo would look like with and without the use of a flash. In that way it is a real eye-opener and it shows clealry the advantage of using a flash in the right circustances and in ways you probalby never realized. With many of his examples it is hard to believe that the image was achieved with only one speedlight. The quality of the photos and printing in general is very high. I don't know how many books I may have given 5 star ratings to over the years but this one is the msot deserving. Mine is not a hardcover but an oversize, high-end, super high quality paperback. In that regard it is the nicest quality paperback I have ever seen on photography. One of my favorite features of this book is that it covers several different types of lighting in photography all using one speedlight. Too many other lighting books focus almost entirely on fashion of portrait photography. Mr. Gockel covers those as well in great detail with beautiful pictures but he also includes product photography, food photography and clever tricks you can do with a flash. I have 4 other books on lighting but this one covers the most ground and is the most informative.

Another great source to learn off camera flash
I love off camera flash and began my speedlight learning and practice with a canon 430-EX II. At now is my only speedlight but I intended to increase family soon with a Yongnuo.A few great flash experts help me to speed up my learning curve: Neil Van Niekerk, Syl Arena, Scott Kelby. To me, Tilo Gockel belongs to the same space. The guy has a gift to summarize in a few words the - several times - intrincated ways to master speedlights. The edition is full of great photos, detailed examples and graphics and Im very happy to have found this author. Definitively, its possible to do wonderful images with few gear. One more thing..as a portrait photographer, the products workshops was a bonus to me, showing very creative and unusual ways to photograph stills.

Misses the Point
Recognizing I am in the minority, I do not have a very good review of this book. One would assume that if an individual buys a book regarding single light photography, that the person is not very experienced. But throughout the book the author introduces rather complex and technical concepts, practices, and assumes the reader has a good knowledge of Photoshop. To be sure, his photographs are beautiful, but I just didn't gain the knowledge that I thought this book would provide. I think a more general narrative discussing concepts and practices while relying less on proprietary devices and advanced Photoshop skills would serve the reader better.

This is a very good book on the use of flash
This is a very good book on the use of flash. Since I'm not a professional photographer and don't have a huge budget, it doesn't do me any good to read about how to deploy ten different studio-grade lights with fancy trigger systems. This book does a wonderful job of showcasing what can be done with a single flash, a bit of planning, and a dash of creativity. Highly recommended. One minor problem. I was reading this while waiting for a doctor's appointment, and a woman sternly rebuked me for reading a pornographic novel about flashing in a public place. Looking at the cover, I could see where she got confused!

Well written text, low res images in digital version
This is a great explanation of single flash photography. Speaking only about the kindle version: the photos provided by way of example are low resolution, such that zooming in on the small photos results in huge loss of detail. This is a photography book for crying out loud! The images are there to demonstrate concepts and details that can only be appreciated with close inspection. One would think that such a book would have photos with appropriate resolution

I couldn't recommend this book
Maybe I am too far ahead of this book, but I found it VERY hard to keep reading. I had to do it in many sessions from agrivation boredom and tired of hearing about his "top shelf" gear being used. It may work well for you, I couldn't recommend this book.

Pretty good book on using one flash and various light modifiers to achieve professional results where you expect
Good book on using one speedlight and various light modifiers where you might expect to need more expensive portable studio lights and battery packs. The author presents seven or eight workshop examples that are well done. I have taken workshops just like those presented in most of the book and found it interesting that they used the same methods and in a couple of cases very different methods we used. The author presented (and indicated he uses) lower budget alternatives to top dollar name brand speedlight equipment as well as several home made alternatives to commercially available holders, modifiers, and other equipment. I liked this part a lot because as he points out when you make it yourself you have control over the quality and how robust the end product will be. A couple of alternative flash units I could not easily find but I don't live in NYC either. All in all the book is very good and reminds me of workshops I have taken on single flash photography and my personal experience. Solid recommendations on equipment and technique with a good balance between the two. Too many similar books focus overly much on equipment or ignore the equipment other than listing what they used to take a set of photographs.

It's like a good manual.
This is a great book by Tilo Gockel. I've shot weddings, corporate and sport events and on my many occasions the natural/ambient light I had wasn't enough to get the shot I was looking for. Without throwing my ISO up to 4000 and hoping my clients loves a bit of grain, I knew I needed to come more custom with off camera flash. If you think this book is too technical then you probably need to find another method of learning because it's key you understand TTL, speed lights, light modifiers and other basics which Tilo describes in this book. There's no other way round it. I'm already having a lot of fun with off camera flash (my dog was my first subject) and it's creating some cool results. Worth learning.

I have read this back to back and it’s interesting and useful it has a few ideas and projects that you can do to get started in the world of flash photography -mi would recommend it to anyone not too familiar with the subject and wants to have a go at a few projects.

BUEN LIBRO

Splendide immagini e descrizioni dettagliate. Consigliatissimo.
