The best gear oil for manual transmissions in India.
My safari storme was due for gear oil change so I changed it at the regular service center. The very next morning when I started the car after oil change, the gear shifts got very hard in 1st and 2nd gear, which lead me to believe that they had used regular conventional(mineral) gear oil, however things were fine once the car warmed up to running temperatures. So I started searching for fully-synthetic 75W-90 gear oil offline and online and stumbled upon Liqui Moly 75W-90 GL4+ rated gear oil. I ordered it and used it. The gear shifts became really soft at cold starts, just like it used to with the original gear oil that came with the car from factory. But the gear shifts became a little bit notchy at cold as well as running temperatues. So I did some research and found that even though GL4+ rated oils are said to be compatible with GL4 and GL5, it contains atleast 50% of the EP(Extreme Pressure) additives of GL5 which is bad for the synchronizers inside the manual transmissions. This EP additives makes GL4+ and GL5 rated oils very slippery and the oil doesn't stick properly to the synchronizers, which overtime corrodes the synchros and shortens the lifespan of gearbox. So this time I searched strictly for GL4 rated oil and this Redline MT90 is the only one that I have found. I used it and it solved my problems. The gearbox now operates just like it used to with the factory oil. So, if you have a manual transmission car of any brand, please avoid GL4+ and GL5 rated gear oils. These oils will damage your transmission in the long run, as these are generally meant for automatic transmissions and rear axles where hypoid gears are present. TATA generally recommends Castrol Syntro synthetic gear oil but this is almost impossible to find at shops and distributors(may be available at metro cities), and not all TATA service centers use this oil at their workshop, atleast not in the area where I service my car so I had to improvise.
