SSCP (ISC)2 Systems Security Certified Practitioner Official Study Guide

Passed!
I passed the SSCP exam using the following resources:SSCP (ISC)2 Systems Security Certified Practitioner Official Study Guide (Murphy)(ISC)2 SSCP Systems Security Certified Practitioner Official Practice Tests (Chapple)I've earned probably 10+ certifications over the past 15 years, and I've almost always used Sybex books as my main source. My method is to read the book and then take the practice tests over and over until I'm scoring 90% and higher. You will need to study individual topics using other resources to get a deeper understanding. I also used the CISSP study guide for some of the topics. It took me four months of studying to pass the SSCP but I had passed Security+ a year ago and so had a head start. What makes Sybex stand apart from others is that they provide a free online testing engine (free for a year once you sign up) so you can customize and retake practice tests over and over. The Study Guide is good but I felt that the practice questions were not well curated and explained. Some of them had the wrong answers marked as correct, and many of them did not have good explanations for why the incorrect answers were incorrect. The Practice Tests book is perfect. I think I may have found one mistake in the whole thing. Both books provided good coverage of the exam material, but you will need other resources to understand the material in depth. Look on EventBrite to find free and cheap training and conferences, I went to several one-day conferences in the Philly area and this was a great learning tool.

well written, covering all subjects clearly.
Enjoyed reading this book. very structured, non-ambiguous. Passed exam with little effort. Took me about a month of reading through it. But I have many years of experience in networking. I feel that the beginner will have to look for some more resources to study (my only reason for not giving it 5 stars). And of course you need to have basic knowledge of networking, protocols, etc. as well as some working experience with cryptography will be a plus.already started reading the CISSP book.

A lot of valuable content.
Great content and has more information in some areas than the "All-in-one". Though it is my secondary source ("All-in-one SSCP" being my primary, this book helped me pass the test with confidence. My only negative comment (therefore the one star less) is some spelling errors, other than that it is definitely a great reference book.I hope that ISC study guides will get better on proofreading since the books are really valuable desk references.

Useful but needs work
The Good:The book covers each of the domains in an easily understood fashion, and is largely free of factual errors, though it does present some opinions as facts. The Bad:The book is incomplete so far as covering all of the kinds of material you may see on the exam, and is probably not sufficient to pass without supplementary material. The online exam only includes 125 questions (at the time of this review), so its re-use value is negligible. The chapters read like they were written in isolation and then slapped together to make a book, with the same basic concepts explained repeatedly, often (nearly) word for word the same. The Ugly:The ebook is extremely poorly formatted, with numerous sections and pages duplicated, and other pages truncated. The book was also poorly edited, with numerous instances of the wrong word in a sentence (sometimes the exact opposite of what should be there).Overall:I would recommend this book as supplementary material or as a review of the material, but not as your primary study source.Disclosure:I passed the SSCP exam easily after reading this book, but as I have a relevant advanced degree I used it solely as review.

This should be one of your study books.
I did use this book to pass on the first try. I read the entire book and completed the questions at the end of each chapter. I also used the practice exam that comes with the book. I found the book to be very helpful. I used this book and another book (maroon/gold) to pass the SSCP exam.

It managed to help me pass, so that's good
I had used this book in order to study for the SSCP Exam, and it actually helped. Though some parts I felt could use a little work, and the first Chapter shouldn't have really been a "Chapter," I still was overall satisfied.

I highly recommend! However
This book helped me pass the SSCP exam of the first time! I highly recommend! However, one must really understand the material; studying only the practice questions will not be enough to pass the test.

Great reading for passing the SSCP Exam
By far, this book is one of the better reading books for the SSCP certification exam and I highly recommend this book for others

Enough to pass
I read this as well as the All In One Guide. I would say the majority of the information was in here, but definitely not all. This is a bit of a dry read with many typos, spelling mistakes, etc, but if you can get past that, it's fine.My recommendation is to read the AIO first, as its easier to read, and then read this. You will notice that both books promise to have 100% of the materials covered and both will have information that is not in the other.I still passed the exam, however, so it is enough to get you to pass.

Buyer Beware!
Bought this book to supplement some in-house training for a career change to the InfoSec industry. If, like me, you are a novice getting started on the road to SSCP then this book DOESNT cover everything in the exam.Segments such as T1 leased lines and Clipper Chips appears on tests which are not mentioned in the book.As such, use this as a shallow dive into concepts before moving into a more comprehensive reference guide like the CBK

Does the job...
I've had a couple of years of broad InfoSec experience, when combining that experience with this book and the isc2 test app I managed to pass the exam 1st time. The book does have errors in it and you do need to watch out for them which is why only 4 stars.

Does what it needs to
Good book, gets you through the exam. But like other books for this cert the material can be a bit dry.

Did the job
Failed first time (2 questions short out of 100) but passed this time after using this book. For me, this is focused on the actual exam, with useful review questions, rather than being a large reference work which (I believe), the 800 pages of lecture notes are. Won't have to sit it again, thank god!
