They are not magnetic but are very high quality none the less.

How do the pieces more when they reach the center?

Follow the trajectory lines. The center is not a square. When you travel through the center , your piece should land on the opposite color on the other side. This is for the round three player board. Not sure about the six sided board. You can also go to YouTube and search three player six sided chess board. Hope this answers your question.
