Does espresso cover gray roots? do gray roots come out lighter, reddish, or "hot"? going darker b/c of gray roots.

I have used cappuccino and it covers the grays VERY well! I have medium brown hair with reddish highlights, and the roots come out brown. They do turn lighter brown as the month goes on, but my whole head does not turn red! This is the first over the counter hair color that takes.
