Finding its footing
This is the beginning of the Hulk. As Stan Lee says, the Hulk started out gray, but Stan "the man" decided that wasn't interesting enough. And so, without so much as a sentence of explanation, the next time we see the Hulk, he is green. No one comments on it. No one even has so much as a thought balloon that says, "Huh! That's new!" Ah, for those innocent days! The Hulk actually flies rather than leaps. Well, it says he's leaping, but not one leaps and changes direction in mid-air. Ah, those innocent days!Stan Lee and Jack Kirby have begun their experiment. There are many nice touches here, but the truth is, it only rates four stars for the nostalgia and the look at the beginnings of a character who will become an icon.If you're purchasing for children, this is as innocent as it gets. This is rated "G" (for "good.") You can purchase this for a child and not worry about the words he will encounter or be anxious that he'll ask embarrassing questions.

Hulk's First Year in the Marvel Age
Collects Hulk 1-6 (1962-63). Extras include an introduction by Stan Lee from 1989, Origins of Marvel Comics essay on Hulk Stan wrote in 1974, house ad from 1962, original art from #3, 5, 6, reprint covers for Marvel Tales Annuals 1 & 2, Marvel Collectors' Item 3-16, and great TPB covers from Bruce Timm. My favorite pieces of artwork are the homages to Kirby's iconic Hulk #1 redone by Alex Ross and Dean White on opposing pages. Both are excellently rendered (Ross' for Hulk Omnibus #1 and Dean White for Masterworks #1 softcover).Inside, Kirby and Reinman team up to provide scintillating art for Hulk #1, Ditko inks Kirby for #2, but he used a lot of thin line work and I didn't find this combo as good as say, FF#13 which had Ditko inking Kirby for the Red Ghost story, which is, in my opinion, was a fantastic combo for Kirby with soft but heavy brushes adding a moody and organic look to Kirby's pencils.Ayers provided excellent inking for 3-5 over Kirby's pencils. Ditko rounds out the collection with penciling and inking #6. Yes, there are only six issues of Hulk before the title was canceled, though each issue is a bit larger at 24 pages. After guest-starring in FF, Tales to Astonish (#60-101) introduced new Hulk stories (reproduced in Masterworks vol 2-3). Incidentally, the Hulk's introduction to the title corresponded with a large jump in reported circulation, from 187,000 to 224,000, in Hulk's first two years on the title. The character went through many changes in the first 6 issues: from grey to green, from changing based on the moon, to changing based on a ray, to not being able to change back to Banner at all and first revealing Hulk's hatred for his alter ego. The topper was when Rick had mental control over the Hulk.Probably the biggest deficit in these early stories was the lack of a great rogue's gallery. While Spider-man and the FF were building a cast of villains that are still menacing Marvel's heroes to this day, the Hulk's only real notable was Thunderbolt Ross. Also included here are the Toad Men, the Gremlin, the Ringmaster, Mongu, Tyrannus, and the Metal Master. Thunderbolt was amazing from the start, though, and is the envy of any rogue's gallery.

This new edition surprasses all other editions in terms of reproducing the original 6 issues of the Incredible Hulk!
Finally! This new edition printing of Marvel Masterworks Incredible Hulk Vol.. 1 reproduces the original coloring of the first 6 issues of the Incredible Hulk comic books. Before this edition, the only book that reproduced the original coloring of those issues was Marvel's Incredible Hulk Omnibus. All previous editions of Marvel Masterworks Incredible Hulk Vol. 1 used remastered coloring to try and modernize the look of these reprinted issues. It was OK, but a bit distracting. I always wanted to have something that reproduces, as close as possible, the first 6 issues of the Incredible Hulk without shelling out $200 for the Omnibus, or a couple thousand dollars for the actual comic books. This new edition is the closest you're gonna get. I'm very satisfied.
