Getting close to God ...
This book is illuminating, concise, insightful, and inspirational. It is exceptionally written. It poses hard questions, and answers those questions from a godly perspective using the stories of Biblical characters and the words of Christ to answer. It synthesizes both Old and New Testaments in answering questions such as "What is God Like?" But most importantly, Lloyd explains the answers not just from a platform of righteousness, but also in the context of man with his human sufferings, inherent weaknesses, fear, pride, doubt, and distrust. Lloyd offers a rich distillation of the Biblical principles and deals directly with those hard questions which people face.

Real Questions and Realistic answers
Ogilvie deals with religious questions many people ask about God and how God interacts with people. His essays are well researched and easy to understand. He rightly stresses both God's initiative and love for humans, and human responsibility to act with the same kind of love and wisdom.

Disappointed
I ordered this book for a small Bible study group that I was in. While I enjoyed some of the questions, the way they were answered and presented did not engage me. I felt that Dr. Oglivie just wrote what he thought the answer was, but did not offer complete Biblical references to his answers. Or he would say that he interprets a verse one way resulting in answer A, but when I read the same verse, I would interpret it another way, resulting in another answer. It just seemed to me that he "interpretted" scripture to make his answers work, but that does not necessarily mean that it is the correct answer. I was ready to be done with the book by week 2.

Great for Bible Studies
I first encountered this book as a young seminary student who was dealing with being a young pastor and the loss of a dear loved one. This book helped me answer many of my questions with sound Biblical scriptures and insight. I have since used it at least once as a small group Bible Study at every church I have been assigned as pastor. It is well written and a very valuable tool for spiritual growth and development.
