My device has a black tipped plug, so any 'black tipped plug' would work (if voltage matches)?

The voltage must match but the OEM plug being black may take a different color since the manufacturer of the replacement tip puts the color they want on a tip.

I noticed that some of the connectors have different colored tips on them. Does this have any significant meaning?

Each color signifies the type connector it fits. Your packaging may tell you the size of each color or you have to try each one to find the one that fits, then remember the color you need. That can be quite helpful if you change tips for different items but if it stays on the same device not so much.

will this work for a sharper image heated mug ?

I don't know about the sharper image mug but I needed something very obscure and this package of charging cable connectors had it.
