Q: I've never used a swift winder. can you use it to wind yarn without the other kind of winder?

You can use this swift without the ball winder, but you will have to wind the yarn into a ball with your hands. If you do not mind that, then that's all you need. I personally find it much easier with both. But,again, not necessary. Good luck!

Q: What kind of wood is this made out of?

Not sure. My husband thinks either maple or birch. It does not appear to be pine. I will go with the Beech wood. I am happy with it. Well made. Good luck!

Q: Do you prefer Starwood’s swift over the Knitters Pride one?

Sorry, I don’t have Knitters Pride but I probably made over a 100 balls just before COVID, preparing for a big group project, and Starwood worked like a charm.

Not really, it requires only minimal assembly.
