A Brutal and Glossy Korean Thriller
This film had been on my 'wish list' film for close to 5 years and my wife & I finally decided to watch it last night. What a treat! 'The Man From Nowhere' was Korea's highest grossing film in its year of release demolishing Hollywood competition like 'Iron Man 2'. I was actually compelled to watch the film when I heard the tragic news that Bob Weinstein's Dimension Films had picked up the rights to 'The Man From Nowhere' and would sadly be remaking it into probably yet another piece of Hollywood trash. When will American audiences finally learn to read subtitles!? It's was an absolute travesty when Spike Lee remade 'Oldboy' and after finally watching 'The Man from Nowhere' I can definitely say the same thing.'The Man from Nowhere' is written and directed by Lee Jeong-beom and stars Korean heartthrob Won Bin ('Mother'). Set around the poorer areas of Seoul, the film follows “a-jeo-ssi” (Korean for Mister), a former black-ops agent for the Korean government, now living a hermetic existence as the owner of pawn shop in a dingy rundown basement. When he unwittingly takes delivery of a camera bag containing cocaine, and attracts the attention of its original nefarious traffickers, he embarks on a murderous rampage when the only person who seems to understand him, a little girl by the name of So-mi, is kidnapped as insurance.Although, as I mentioned earlier, I'm not a fan of Hollywood remakes this film can't claim to be highly original. It's extremely reminiscent of Luc Besson's 'Leon'/'The Professional' but nevertheless it's still a fast-paced and brilliantly brutal action thriller anchored by a strong emotional relationship that most audiences can't help falling for.The action choreography, reminiscent of 'A Bittersweet Life', is superb and the climactic knife fight is absolutely gripping. I'm a massive fan of Korean cinema and 'The Man from Nowhere' does not disappoint. For those who crave uncompromising action and someone to cheer for, this film is for you. For others seeking a powerful dramatic piece on redemption, then this still delivers by the truck load!

great action film
The Retired Man Comes Back For OnE LaST jOb is definitely a cliche, so is These Guys Messed With The Wrong Former Badass but also heck it's a good film ontop of that, it's a slow burn at first then ramps up to a full onslaught of violence, the action is well shot and fun, it's a bit jason bourne-y at times but that's not really a bad thing, the plot is well structured and there's a lot of catharsis in the storyit doesn't really take any risks with the formula but it involves a lot more punching and knife play than the other examples like Nobody and John Wick, idk, i liked it, maybe you will toooooo

Amazing movie
This movie is absolutely brilliant, seriously the rest of the reviews must be talkin about the wrong movie if they rate it less than a five.As a big fan of South Korean movies I always tend to know which ones are good and which ones are rubbish. The Man from Nowhere is an amazing movie with an amazing plot. Yes SOME of the storyline is borrowed from the movie 'Taken' but this movie is a million times better with much more action.Won Bin is an amazing actor, and this movie portrays how great he is perfectly. He sticks to the role well, and I am sure he is the reason this movie is such a big success.I don't want to give away anything like the other reviews have, but if you love South Korean movies, and you love movies that have great action scenes you should buy this. The fight scene at the end of the movie is breathtaking, and if an action movie found a way to make me cry, then you know it's gonna be great.Don't doubt yourself, watch this movie!!

'Taken meets Oldboy'
This film is a little scorcher, what it lacks in originality it more than makes up for in pace, tempo, tension and buckets of action. The plot without spoiling it is fairly simple. A former Special Forces operative has gone into semi hiding, taking up a job as a downtown pawn broker. He deliberately cuts himself off from the outside world, except from his young neighbour So-mi.Then a drug deal goes very bad and So-mis's mother is involved leading the drug bosses and police to come calling. Then it all kicks off. We are told the story of Tae-shik in flash back and how he came to be as isolated as he now chooses, and how he is actually an excellent if not ruthless killing machine. This then is a full throttle re take on the `Leon;' formula with a Korean twist. It is superbly acted and even if some of the `baddies' are a bit two dimensional it works as they are surrounded by so many more fully developed characters. The cinematography is brilliant as I have come to expect from South Korea and the action is first rate. The plot may be simple but you do not feel that whilst you are watching as it just carries you along with the momentum. This is in Korean with English sub titles that are very easy to read. With a running time of 114 minutes, this is not a short film, but it felt more like half an hour. This really is a great action film, with a bit of heart, it does have an 18 cert, so if you are on the squeamish side you may be put off. I found it just top rate entertainment and thoroughly recommend.

A Brilliant film
Korean filmaking at its very best. Man On Fire meets Old Boy.To quote the film bio (so as not to give to much away) the story is about an ex special forces operative Tae-Shik who is scarred and traumatised by his past. His only contact to the outside world is his neighbour So-Mi, a young girl with a troubled mother. Following a drug deal that goes wrong, the innocent So-Mi falls prey to Korea's ruthless, dark underworld. As Tae-Shik takes on the crime mob to save his friend, the thugs realise the 'The Man From Nowhere' is a man to be feared.

An excellent 4k transfer of one of the best Korean action movies made
I am surprised it took so long for them to decide on releasing a 4k version of this movie as this movie came out in 2010. This movie almost has an old-school action vibe to it; made purely for entertainment ala the action movies from the mid 90's to the early 2000's. As this is a 4k Blu-ray you are likely reading this because you are already a fan. (Side note: I can't believe that the main actor of this movie did not do any more movies after this. He totally has action star vibes.) Anyway onto the review. In this review I am only going to talk about the picture quality and sound qualityPicture quality = 10/10 What's great about Korean cinema is that their picture quality is SUPER clear. There is little to no dot crawl. Some people like dot crawl (they it bring the film "alive") but on an 85" TV dot crawl looks like bugs crawling around under the layer of the actual movie. Colors and amazing and the contrast is great with the dark scenes inky black. Image is sharp as heck.Sound quality = 8/10 I didn't find any issues and enjoyed it on my mediocre sound system.I didn't look at the special features though I tend not to.I recommend this purchase if you love the movie.I hope they release a 4k version of "No Tears for the Dead" AKA 우는 남자 (Crying Man) done by the same director. I love that movie just as much as this.
