I’ve had this hose reel installed for a week now, and I’m already loving the convenience it brings. The retractable feature is a game-changer, keeping my yard looking tidy and saving me from the hassle of coiling hoses manually. However, the installation process was a bit of a saga. The instructions recommended a drill bit that was too large, so when I drilled into the stud, the bolts just spun freely. This meant I had to relocate the mount, drill another set of holes, and patch the old ones—talk about a DIY detour! Also, some of the instructions were hard to understand — definitely not a native-English writer. For anyone installing this on wood without anchors, I’d suggest starting with a smaller drill bit than what the instructions recommend. Only go larger if the bolts give you trouble. This little tip could save you a lot of time and frustration like I had. Despite the installation hiccup, the reel itself is fantastic. It’s sturdy, swivels smoothly, and rewinds the hose with ease. If you’re looking for a reliable hose reel and don’t mind straying from the instructions, this one is a solid choice. Just be prepared to improvise a bit during installation. Happy watering!

I was a little sceptical of the hose reel but after having used it for a while not I'm pleased with how it works. The only problem I've had with it is we had someone water for us while we were gone and they tried to push the hose in when they couldn't figure out how to get the reel to do it. Messed up the hose inside so had to pull most of the hose out and let the hose reel do it's job, so no real issue. I mounted this to a 4 x 4 post (see pic) and it's rock solid buried about 2 ft of post in concrete and cut some grooves so bolts would fit and not have to add another board to mount to, came out clean looking and rock solid. Longevity? it's only been a month or so but it seems like it's good for the long haul but time will tell.

5/12/2025> updated to 4 stars after receiving a full replacement unit under TWO YEAR warranty. TO BE FAIR HERE, evidently with my original issues & review below a year ago I did not follow the proper procedure to notify the manufacturer of my issues through Amazon? I called the support number I thought Amazon had listed. Their e-mail communications (I found months later) offering to send a complete replacement unit were in my spam e-mail unread (my error). I had called the company direct, evidently you need to work through Amazon via e-mail to send your address. Once I responded via e-mail to their e-mail offer with my info I had a complete brand new unit on my doorstep in a few days. The bottom line is the unit has a two year warranty and they stood behind it. That was the right move here as the unit was defective. I am hopeful this one holds up better. I will probably just use the replacement stainless steel 8’ connector hose I bought for it after the first hose sprung a leak. I will use this new replacement unit for a while and update if I have issues or it works okay after a year. **********XXXXX My Original review of the first unit is here for reference>>>>>>. I thought I found the perfect hose reel solution for my wife to use to water plants & pots scattered across our rear patio area of 50-70 ‘ that mimics what I use in the garage for my air compressor hose. A smooth & easy way to uncoil hose up to 90’ and have it recoil easily & quickly. I bought the Giraffe AW40 5/8th”x 90’ in May of 2024 with that thought . NOT SO. Within a couple of months the intake hose sprung a pin hole leak (see photo)then multiples. The mechanism for rewinding is not consistent or reliable ( see video) when pulling out hose and trying to let it recoil back. Sometimes you can see the hose carrier part (white part in gear) freeze & not move back and forth as it should to evenly coil from side to side. Sounds like some clanking / noise too. We have never just let it go, we always walk it back from where it has been stretched out. It rarely is out past 50’. I initially e-mailed Giraff customer support on leaking hose….nothing back. For the purchase price of $169.00 it is not what I expected. I would look elsewhere as others have similar comments.

As at least one other person noted, the internal mechanism that travels back and forth to place the hose in the reel in a uniform manner is cheap and stopped working. It appears to be driven by a worm gear that is in turn driven by an elastic belt of some sort. The belt moves as it should, but the plastic piece that its supposed to be connected to stopped moving along with it. Maybe broken inside? I'm not sure. But it started having problems less than a year after I bought it and the problem kept getting worse and it no longer moves back and forth at all, making the reel completely useless. I can reach inside and turn it manually, but its very impractical and difficult. It feels like internally it seizes up for some reason. It's so cheap that it seems like planned obsolescence as someone else thought. I had never abused the device in any way. I expect much better quality than I got. I won't be buying any more products from Giraffe Tools.

I read a lot of the reviews and was concerned with pressure issues, but before I installed it, I tested GPM and pressure washer use. Here are the results. Pressure Test - No Attachment - Existing 3/4" Hose - Filled 5g bucket in 58 seconds - Giraffe 5/8" Hose (This item) - Filled 5g bucket in 1min5sec Pressure Test - My own attachment, sprinkler setting - Existing 3/4" Hose - Filled 5g bucket in 1min 10 seconds - Giraffe 5/8" Hose (This item) - Filled 5g bucket in 1min 25sec Pressure Washer Test - I had issues with a cheap older hose where it would suck the hose dry, so this was my natural concern. However with my Generac 3GPM gas pressure washer, I had zero issues using it. I pressure washed for 30min and had the same performance as with my 3/4" contractor grade hose. Install was SUPER easy. The bracket comes off then once installed, you just fit the housing on it. Retracts very easily - Swivel is great. Overall it's been a great purchase. I'll update if I have any concerns with longer term performance, but this is a great and easy hose to use.

This was a nice little unit for a time but tragically, mine died and stopped retracting. We tried to fix it, but it never recovered sadly. I'll have to get a new one. As pretty fully inoperable these days and it was supposed to save my wife a ton of time realistically and has not.

This hose reel is the 5/8” hose width x 90’ length model. It was very easy to install because I had a stud in the perfect placement, so I didn’t use the anchors, only the lag bolts provided. It is VERY sturdy and secured to the wall. The functionality has been flawless. No leaks! The reel works exactly as designed. I pull the hose out to the correct length and it stays locked. A slight pull unlocks the hose and I slowly allow the hose to reel back into the housing as the excess water drains from the nozzle. Speaking of the nozzle, I am not having the negative experiences others have had with the nozzle. I added a quick release so I can change from the nozzle, to a power washer, to a pool sentry that fills our swimming pool. When the nozzle is attached, it functions perfectly. I like the on/off lever function because I have arthritis in my hands, so squeezing a handle can be painful and this function helps to alleviate that concern. The spray patterns are great for each of their intended use. The water flow has been uninterrupted and strong. This is the best hose reel that I’ve owned. Highly recommended!

Pas encore installé car acheté en fin de saison. Ce sera pour le printemps prochain. Le produit me semble solide. On verra à l'usage mais je suis satisfait de la qualité pour le moment.

Great product! We did have a slight issue with the hose not reeling back in after the first season of use. I reached out to the company through Amazon and they sent us a new one within a few days. Amazing customer service. We have 2 of these and would highly recommend.

Tout est plus aisé lors de l’utilisation du boyau d’arrosage. Très pratique. Rapport qualité prix, je pense avoir fait un bon choix. J’ai choisi de prendre un dévidoir ayant 25 pieds de boyau excédents mes besoin…question de ne pas trop étirer le ressort à l’intérieur. En principe, le ressort ne travaillera qu’à 75% de sa capacité nominale. Garder une tension lors du rembobinage pour éviter le croisement du boyau à l’intérieur de la bobine. Conserver la pression d’eau sur le boyau pendant le rembobinage. Ceci évitera peut-être un coincement à l’intérieur du dévidoir. Après un été d’utilisation avec précaution, le tout fonctionne encore à merveille.
