An outstanding contribution to the field
As author Kagami Jigoku Kobayashi notes in the introduction to this essential reference work, the universe of Japanese horror and fantasy films prior to 1949 is not only overlooked in English reference works but is also exceedingly difficult to engage with, due to the unavailability of the films in question. Consequently, any fan of more modern Japanese genre cinema (Godzilla, tokusatsu superheroes, J-Horror, etc) has a massive blind spot that is hard to overcome. Enter Kobayashi's well researched and approachable survey of Japanese horror films up through 1949. Each film is presented with some basic filmographic details (original Japanese title, English translated title, production company, director, year of release) and in almost all cases a short description. Many are illustrated with stills. It may not be an option to watch Wasei Kingu Kongu on demand, but here's the next best thing--and information on the weird sub-genre of 1930s King Kong knock-offs. Do you enjoy Nobuo Nakagawa's Ghost Story of Yatsuya? Well, here's information on dozens of other versions of the same story! This is an absolute must-have for any student of Japanese genre films, and it is rich with information you will not be able to find anywhere else.

Revelatory info on a lost era of film
This is the only English-language resource on silent and early sound era Yokai, kaiju, proto-anime and genre-bending weirdness (including the earliest NINJA MOVIES) in English out there. Considering the vast majority of the films covered within are lost to quakes, WWII bombings, post-war censorship and just plain old age and decay, the fact that any data, descriptions and images even exist is a miracle. Much of the text is lists of films that have no further info than titles, studios and release dates, but descriptions and photos when available are great. I consider this essential to Japanese monster enthusiasts, horror lovers and even for ninjutsu historians.
