Why is everything upside down

This answer isn't written by me, but by WR Saunders. It explains the answer much clearer than I would: "Light passing through a substance with a different refractive index is bent. Glass and Air seem to be the two substances in your question, and glass has a much larger refractive index than air.A convex lens, like the one in a magnifying glass, bends the light from the object in a way that depends on its focal length. Objects closer to the lens than the focal length are magnified, with a right side up image being formed farther from the lens than the distance to the object. Objects farther than the focal focal length are compressed, with an inverted image being formed closer to the lens than the distance to the object.Most loupes have a focal length of 3-6" (7-15cm). Hold one at arms length and look across the room to the door and you'll see a nicely focused, inverted, compressed image. No magnification here."
