First off, yes, it has a plastic handle. I don’t know why people who work with wood should be upset by this. Make yourself a handle with wood if the plastic is an issue. With that being said, this is a great product. Both sides chew through wood very well. I’m currently working on a walking stick that is made from old dried out oak. It’s a little bigger around that I want, and my draw knife was struggling to cut through it. That is no issue for the Shinto rasp. It does what it is supposed to and it does it well. It has two sides with one side being finer and less aggressive than the other. Both sides a quite effective though. 5 stars every day. Great product!

This is probably one of the single greatest tools I’ve purchased in my woodworking journey. I primarily make wooden self bows, non-returning boomerangs (NRBs/Kylies), spoons and other bushcraft related projects. This rasp has revolutionized the way I approach projects. Once the majority of the work is done green and the project dried, this double sided rasp makes short work of anything that’s left. The teeth really clog if the wood is green so use it in seasoned wood only. The versatility of having a coarse and fine side is excellent and the fine side can easily step up to sanding with 120 grit paper. The rasp is well made, durable, and compact enough to stow in my rucksack or the back of my hatchback. It’s light and has become an indispensable tool! I would buy one again no questions asked.

I bought this because Paul Sellers recommended it, and it's a nice file. It's very aggressive and removes wood quickly when you use the rougher side. The soother side isn't THAT smooth, but it gives a nice finish. It seems to be working well. It seems long for a rasp, but I like the length. Sometimes it's hard to start, but that because it's aggressive. The main problem with this rasp is in shaping narrow items, which can fit in between the plates. It just doesn't work very well in things smaller than about 1/2" in width. For thicker items, it's great.

Great product. It's a goto tool in my shop. The picture is misleading. The handle shown is a turned wood handle, but the handle on the actual product is plastic and rubber. Doesn't affect the usefulness, and I'm not sure that it's even inferior as a result.

I've been restoring a few vintage axes and rehafting them. There's a lot of fitting to be done on the tongue of a new handle but also a lot to remove under the cheeks of the axe, thinning them to the thickness of the head or less so the handles don't get damaged. On my first axe, I shaped the entire handle with a four-in-hand rasp, a file and sandpaper, it worked but it took a long time and a lot of effort. Then I read a few recommendations for the Shinto rasps on a Bushcrafter forum. Haven't used the Shinto on an axe handle yet but I did use it to chamfer the top edges of a red oak block to use as a base for a leather strop. It ground through the oak with very little effort and I was able to refine the tool marks with the finer side. I went over the finished block with 120 grit w/d and was ready to cement the latigo in place. If you need to remove a lot of wood quickly and leave a semi-finished surface, check out these Shinto rasps, they're absolutely worth buying and a real bargain for the price.

An excellent tool for woodturning. There are two sides. One side is medium coarse, and the side is medium fine.

Very disappointed to receive cheaper plastic handle version rather than the wood one pictured on the advertisement. Went back to order page and noticed that it is careful not to describe what the handle is made of. In Australia, this kind of mis-selling selling is illegal. International sellers must think they can get away with it because of the hassle to return items.
