Q: Didn’t come with setup instruction?

Doesn’t need any really. Hook it up like you would a normal air bubbler. They send you tubing to attach the stone to the glass pipe on the middle. I did use Vaseline to help slide the tube onto the glass where the air come out of. I also trimmed it a bit where I connected the air stone.

Q: Can fish go up from the bottom of the cup and get trapped?

I suppose they could swim in there but it hasn’t been a problem. I’m actually using mine to hold the roots of a pothos coming out of the aquarium (upside down). It started looking gross the typical way you use it from the bubbles and mineral build up from my water being harder.

Q: what does this actually do? i get the concept, but does this sit near water level?

It stops the air bubbles from rupturing at the surface, it’s more of a controlled release. I have my half way down my tank. It can be placed anywhere. There’s a tiny hole at the top of the glass where the air is released. I used an air stone at first and the bubbles where pooping and water was going into my aquarium fans and one already shorted out. Looks neat running too. You can youtube people using these also to see where people place them.

The tubing from the air line hooks inside the cup on the “bottom” and then you will have to cut a second line to attach to the top to go to the pump.
