Gunsmithing the AR-15, Vol. 1: How to Maintain, Repair, and Accessorize

Patrick Sweeney has an easy-reading style that transfers tons of knowledge before the reader even realizes it. He explains things in detail that need explaining, but does so in a way that most anyone can understand. This book goes far beyond simply assembling parts into a rifle, or changing sights, etc. This book has paid for itself over and over, by helping me to avoid bad caliber choices, poor quality magazines, and improving my maintenance and cleaning routine. This is one book I will keep on my bookshelf as long as I am able to still read the words. While there is a substantial chapter on barrels, the author does not explore in great detail alternative calibers for this platform, although he does discuss the merits and shortcomings of several popular alternative calibers. If you are wanting to rebarrel or build an upper on a wildcat cartridge, or one that you cannot find already assembled, you will need additional information from another source.

I've only had a chance to pick through a few items in this book, but what I have read is good. I would have liked more pictures to visualize better since I'm not up on all the part names, but there probably are enough pictures for most people. The reading is very comprehensive and it keeps your interest. It is worth the money to have a written reference in case you can't find a gunsmithing video that covers what you want or don't have internet access.

Good magazine

Very informative and detailed book about the AR-15. I do wish it had more diagrams and detailed pictures. Another note is that the book is filled with typo's and grammatical errors, but still easily understood.

I'm new to the AR, no GUNSMITHING experience, but long time shooter/reloader and hunter. This book is well written and detailed with loads of practical advise and pertinent negatives (what NOT to do's) as well as important what TO DO's. I would recommend it to all and am glad I purchased it. My only regret was the outdated resource page in the back of the book.

This is hands down the best book I've read on ARs. Backed with years of hands-on experience, and filled with sensible advice as well as a sense of humor. He never talks down to the reader even when going over basics. My e-book version is so full of my bookmarks and highlighting that I'm thinking I need to buy a hard copy as well. I also have his Vol. 2 but really, this one is all you need.

Ich habe mir das Buch gekauft, weil mich das System der AR15 interessiert und ich meine verstehen will. Das Buch führt einen über die Geschichte an die Technik heran und versetzt einen in die Lage, die Wartung, Reinigung und Reparaturen selbst durchzuführen. Das Buch geht Teilweise auch etwas über das hinaus, was in Deutschland ohne einen Büchsenmacher gemacht werden darf. Fine ich sehr interessant auch wenn ich es nicht ausprobieren werde. Wer eine AR15 hat oder sich eine zulegen will, oder sich auch nur für die Technik interessiert, findet hier eine gute Grundlage.

This book is informative and entertaining. The book covers how and why you should modify your AR-15 in great detail. I rarely found myself searching for other sources on information.
