The English Atlantic in an Age of Revolution, 1640–1661

This book delivers on its title
Carla Gardina Pestana does an excellent job of relating events in England during the period 1640-1661 to reactions in its possessions in North America and the Caribbean. Of particular interest is the interplay between New and Old England and the fall from grace of Massachusetts as its opposition to religious toleration placed it out of step with the rapidly evolving stance of the English parliament. Pestana really manages to convey a sense of the Englishness of the Atlantic world and gives extensive coverage to all the colonies - her treatment of royalist uprisings in Bermuda and Virginia is also very good. A subtle and well-argued book.
