Tests worked less than 1 in 10 trips. Worst performing device in its category of the 5 that we tested.
Absolutely worthless as any form of tracking device. It's a nice design and form-factor, relative to other competitors on the market, but as a tracking device, this is the worst performing of all of the devices we've tested. We've tested over 5 different devices extensively with travel mostly domestic and some International. This device RARELY updates it's location unless it is within 10ft to 20ft of bluetooth range, which is basically useless because that's basically only when the luggage is in your hand. It updates it's location when NOT in your hand about 1 in 10 times on average. And if you try to "force" it to locate your device, while using the mobile app, it says it's trying to reach it via the "antenna" but we have not gotten that to work a single time and we are constantly trying to use that feature. I suspect that it is simply a matter of signal strength, being inside the belly of a plane or inside of essentially a concrete bunker that is most airport terminals just completely blocks the signal. And since it only tries to "ping" the mothership maybe once an hour, the couple of minutes it's out in the open between plan to terminal isn't enough time for it to locate itself. So I don't think they could ever improve this product, as it is currently designed. It needs to have a complete redesign and use the software and algorithms in nearly every cell phone to locate itself. Lugloc focuses on the ridiculous feature of 14-days battery life, but neglected to produce an actual product that works for those 14 days!!! The geeks in their R&D department need to get out and actually USE the product so they realize what a colossal waste of their funding and failed consumer experience this product is in reality. I would be perfectly fine with 1 or 2 days battery life if the product actually WORKED. Obviously more battery would be better, but just working for even 10 to 15 hours would satisfy the use-case of tracking your luggage on a normal flight. We are a scientific and very methodical firm so we believe our tests are not only exhaustive, but also unbiased. This product rates the worst of ALL other products tested simply because it's probability of actually working is less than 1 in 10 trips, but when it does work, its latency is anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. That is, on the rare occasions that it did update it's location, those updates were anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours after the device actually arrived at the destination. Yet another critical flaw of this device is that it doesn't do real-time updates of location. It's tragically flawed algorithm tries to divine when it has "landed" and only then supposed updates you, but even that rarely happens. I'm sure this is a failed strategy of extending the battery life, but instead, it has the unintended consequence of rendering this device useless because the algorithm simply doesn't work and thus, the device doesn't update it's location. Instead, what ALL of the competing devices have figured out is that updated location information is by far the most important core feature that you at least must get right at a minimum, and then that allows for a traveler to instantly get location information or at most, 5-minute-old location information. I would consider this product a complete failure and I would give their R&D department a failing grade for focusing on the wrong things and completely failing to deliver on the most basic core feature of the product.

Worked well in Africa
I've been very pleased with the performance of this device. I ordered two of them for an international hunting trip with a multi-day lay over through several African countries. I placed the LugLocs in the rifle cases for those were the only bags I was concerned with. I was able to consistently track the location of my bags (within a general vicinity) while on the ground. As my plane arrived into a new airport I would activate my app and within 3-5 minutes it would inform me where my bags were (Country, Town, Region, etc.). The accuracy of location is approximate to a general 1/4 mile region. So don't expect it lead you right up to the bag, but simply assure you that your bag is in vicinity. However, if you are concerned if your bag has made it on the plane (for departure), I would request a location of the bags while I was seated in the plane at the gate. Then when we taxied to the runway i would request another location after traveling a reasonable distance and seeing that the map locator had indicated that the bag had moved was enough to assure me the bags were on the plane. Unfortunately the Bluetooth functionality is of little use, for you have to be quite close for it to connect.

No working?!
UPDATE: After one day, I received an email from Alberto (customer service manager) and he helped me to figure out what was wrong. Basically, it seems that the SIM used in the device has not coverage in my area. So, I had to do the first activation from work and It went smoothly. I will update this review again after my trip. OLD: I received the item in time. Unfortunately it seems to be not working (there is no gps connection and it can be activated in any ways), although the item switches on and off correctly. I had tried to contact the customer service via app, but they never replied . If you try to use the website, you will find out that the webpage is not working at all. Bottom line: Nice idea, but 70 bucks are too much for a plastic piece with a few lights!

A useful luggage tracker.
It works well for me but from reading the other reviews it seems that what people expect from the product is not what it actually does. Personally I find it very useful but I can understand that other people find it frustrating since people seem to expect a GPS style tracker and not a device that uses various technologies to answer two questions: did my luggage make it on the plane and if my luggage didn’t arrive at the airport I flew into then what airport is it in? LugLoc has two modes of locating your luggage: Bluetooth and GSM. The Bluetooth mode is useful for finding out if your luggage made it on the plane and for finding out if it’s on a carousel or in say oversized. The way it works is you push the Bluetooth icon in the LugLoc app on your phone and if your luggage is close by you’ll see some bars showing just how close by it is. So once you get on the plane and sit down you turn it on and if your luggage is loaded on the plane then the proximity display will show you it’s close by. I usually do this after everyone is aboard but before they shut the doors. The GSM mode has a different purpose. Let’s say your luggage doesn’t get on the plane and you arrive at your destination. You can then send a trace (you buy traces in packages of 5, 10, or unlimited) and it will tell you what airport your luggage is in. So if you left from Seattle and flew to Moscow it will tell you if your luggage made it to Moscow, is back in Seattle, or went to Miami. It’s not a GPS so it can’t tell you exactly where your luggage is. Instead it triangulates off of cell phone towers and gives you a general area which is good enough for knowing which airport it’s in. It’s important to know though that in order to be FAA compliant the LugLoc turns off when it’s moving (so it doesn’t transmit in a flying plane) and only wakes up and responds to traces when it’s been stationary for 12 minutes. So if you send a trace and your luggage is in transit then you won’t get a response until it arrives at an airport and stops moving. Similarly, if you’re using Bluetooth to find out if your luggage made it on the plane with you it’s worth waiting to give your luggage time to get loaded and become stationary again. I do have a few small complaints about the device. The first is you have to turn it on to charge it. That means you have to remember to turn if off when you’re done charging it. If you forget then the device will remain on and be discharged when it’s time to put it in your luggage. The second complaint is that it takes a long time to charge. So if you do forget to turn if off after charging it and it’s now dead when it’s time to put it in your luggage then there isn’t much you can do about it since it takes 8 or more hours to charge the device and you probably don’t have that kind of time left before you fly. However, these complains are small and in general I find it answers two questions I want answered when I fly: did my luggage make it on the plane and if my luggage didn’t arrive at the airport I flew into then what airport is it in?

DO NOT BUY — Obsolete Technology.
Do NOT waste your time buying these. As soon as I activated it, I received the following message from the company. It’s important to note that I purchased these from their OFFICIAL store in December 2020 — a full year after they became obsolete. Complete crap. Dear Customer, Over the past months, we have been contacting our Customers to educate them about the transition away from 2G networks happening around the world. Today we have an update that specifically affects your LugLoc. LugLoc’s functionality is similar to that of a mobile phone and contains a SIM card provided by a telecom company allowing it to operate worldwide. Some operators have stopped or are planning to stop offering 2G services. Your unit was manufactured before December 31, 2016, and unfortunately, the SIM card included in it will no longer be active after November 30, 2019, due to the fact that the telecom company that provides it will no longer offer 2G connectivity. All units manufactured after January 1st, 2017 are immune to this problem. Our current product GEGO, comes with a SIM Card from one of the largest telecom companies in the world, offering the best 2G and 3G coverage, thanks to their roaming capabilities and contracts with hundreds of telecom companies worldwide. GEGO combines WiFi networks detection with Cell Tower locations, dramatically improving the accuracy of your location reports. We take this opportunity to offer you a unique deal to maintain your tracking experience: GET a 3G GEGO at 30% OFF! I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and I hope we can keep on providing you with peace of mind not only when you travel but also on a day to day basis with our new GEGO. Excellent product. Clever design. Works great. Very long battery life. Very useful. A+
Simply a wonderful product. I travel very often for business and being able to know where my luggage is when I land is wonderful. The unit works very well. The unit itself is slim and lightweight. When on the ground between connecting flights, I like to confirm that my luggage arrived with me. When I land at my destination, when I walk off the plane, I do a track, then I can see my luggage made it with me to the destination city. It works very well. A few detailed points: 1) Battery - the battery really does last a long time - 15 days or more. Excellent battery longevity. 2) One minor point that is a bit odd - the switch needs to be in the "on" position to charge it (it won't charge if the switch is off) 3) Accuracy: The unit uses the GSM phone networks/tower triangulation (not GPS satellite), which keeps the power consumption low (which is great). Thus the accuracy is perhaps 300-500 feet (which is absolutely good enough for my needs), but it does not have GPS satellite (30 feet or so) level of accuracy. For me, that's a great tradeoff. The price of the unit I think is reasonable, and the service price ($29/year for unlimited tracking) is very reasonable too. Overall very satisfied. A+.

Probably OK for airport locations, but not very accurate.
I purchased this primarily to be able to track cases that I ship via UPS. I had an instance last year where UPS delivered one of my cases to a different hotel leaving me without the equipment I needed to do a job that weekend. It was eventually found, but not by UPS. An event coordinator at the other hotel found it among her cases and contacted me. Fortunately my phone number was on the outside of the case! On to the LugLoc... It's a big larger than I thought (palm sized), but not too thick so the size was manageable for something that would go inside a case. I plugged it in for the initial charge prior to using it as instructed. It uses a standard micro USB cable and includes the AC plug. The ON/OFF button is located right next to the USB port and while it isn't difficult to find being red on a black object, it is very small and tight fitting making it difficult to turn on or off. This might be a good thing so it doesn't get accidentally turned off while bouncing around in your suitcase, but you have to be very deliberate and use a fingernail to slide it on, and you have to turn it on in order to charge it. Unlike all of the LogLoc documentation that says it takes 12 hours for the initial charge, it took more than 24 hours before it was fully charged. Adding the device to the LugLoc app on the iPhone was very straight forward as was the initial registration. Once activated, the Bluetooth proximity alert started going off. I put the device in a different room and as I walked away the Bluetooth told me the distance was getting greater until I was out of Bluetooth range and then it switched to cellular triangulation. So far so good. I put the LugLoc into the center console of my car and drove to work, left it there and walked into my office. I fired up the app and after a few seconds of searching it found the device, but here is where I have an issue with it: the accuracy is horrible! The map showing the location was centered on the nearby highway about 2,700 ft. from where my car is parked. While my car was certainly within the red circle on the map, the circle has a diameter of about 10,000 ft giving you an area of about 2.8 square miles. Incidentally, I am sitting about 275 ft. from my car. This "accuracy" is probably sufficient if all you want to know is if your luggage is in the airport, or which airport it's in, but doesn't work for my purposes. I read a response from LugLoc to an Amazon review where they said that the accuracy was dependent on the location of the cell towers, the strength of the signal, etc. so I turned off the wifi on my iPhone to check my location using just the GSM signal and Google maps dropped a pin directly over my head and not 2,700 ft. away. That's really lousy accuracy as far as I'm concerned. I will be returning it.

Worthless if you cannot depend on it to locate your luggage !
Worked fine on numerous trips in the USA and to Europe, but when I went to China, all tracking was lost as soon as I left Los Angeles Airport (LAX) The LugLoc could not locate my luggage when I arrived in Beiging, China. and continued throughout our trip to Xian, and Shanghai. Even when I returned to Los Angeles, I could not locate my luggage at LAX. Eventually my luggage arrived on the conveyor, but still could not be located on the LugLoc app...grrrr ! I finally arrived home in Texas, and hours later it still could not locate my luggage even though it was only a few feet away. I contacted LugLoc and tech-support did something, and it finally found my luggage at home. That's when he told me that the last known location was at LAX on the day we departed for China? He had no explanation as to what happened and why my luggage was not tracked in China. When something designed to track and locate your luggage, but fails when traveling and even fails when your luggage is only feet away from you makes the LugLoc a total failure.

Great product, lacks some features.
This device, isn't the best I've come across, but it's proven it's worth, with my luggage. The battery life is excellent, with only one charge, I've taken 5 flights, with approximately 24-hours usage in my suitcase, and still have 60% battery. It lacks GPS tracking, which is disappointing, as my BlueSmart carry-on, has all three tracking features: Mobile Network, GPS, and Bluetooth. The software can be temperamental, and sometimes fails to run on my Sony Xperia XZ, but this may be down to me running a custom operating system. The device, will notify you as soon as your luggage has stopped moving, as the built-in sensors, detect movement, and disable the device, as per FAA rules. But stood at the baggage carousel, you will get an alert when the device is in range, and it's acts like a homing device, vibrating your phone at different speeds, depending on distance. Cell tower location, is only as good as the cell network in the area you are in, so if you're in the middle of nowhere, with no reception on your phone, don't expect this to work via GSM. You will need to purchase an additional plan, if you wish to use this device, beyond a year. Prices are reasonable, but the question is: How much is the contents of your suitcase worth? I carried approximately £1,200 of electronics (large Bluetooth speaker, LED projector, Blackmagic video assist, and various other electronic equipment), and I'm quite paranoid that my case would get lost. I'd recommend this product, based on the fact it's always located my luggage.

Great first trip
Worked flawless on my first trip with plenty of battery life remaining after 15 hrs of travelling.

Must for any traveller!
Probably the best thing I have ever purchased. I go to mascot costume events alot and have expensive, one of a kind costumes to worry about. These Lugloc devices take away some of the stress of worrying if my costumes arrived. Battery lasts 2 weeks if not slightly more too. A must for any traveller.

Peace of mind
Good product, definitely gave me the peace of mind I was looking for when traveling with my instruments. Enough battery left over for my return journey too. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lugloc-Bluetooth-Technology-Luggage-Locator/dp/B017RWSBAY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480511907&sr=8-1&keywords=lugloc
