Fine diagnostic tool that you will need, if you do your own repairs!
Delivered promptly, on Jan. 6th, USPS. Was packaged nicely in bubble wrap envelope. If you, as I, repair our own vehicles, to save $80.00 an hour labor charges, you know it helps to be able to read the codes and then reset theOn Board Computer! The Excelvan U480 Car Auto Diagnostic Scanner works great, and showed my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport, with V6 SOHC engine, the lean conditions of P0171 (lean left bank), PO174 (Lean Right Bank), and PO455 (Vacuum leak).I found the disconnected vacuum hose, and clipped off the hardened end, reattaching it. No other codes came up, so, this vehicle, bought on Craigslist for $1700.00, is a real bargain, with 140,000 miles, and should work well for another 360,000+miles! We have a couple more with >280,000 miles on them, without problems! Also, bought those others, All Wheel Drives, on CL for <$900,00 each.Excelvan U480 reads, and resets codes. This is a well made device, at a GREAT price! The booklet is well written, with instructions, pictures, and lists the trouble codes in the 46 page booklet, on pages 12 through 46.The package is suitable for my storage of the book and Excelvan U480 Scanner. Nice tool, which would have cost me$46,000.00 if I had bought the SnapOn diagnostic scope cart, instead...Actually, you can go to most auto parts stores, and get codes read for free, but, their interpretation of the code might not be accurate, and you might purchase expensive parts that don't always repair the real problem!Better to have the proper tools in your possession, and with some knowledge, it saves time, money, towing, and travel!

Its pretty basic but it works!
I ordered this to scan my 2000 Blazer that had tons of issues. It will give you the basic codes and you can use the book of codes that is provided or google those codes to get a general idea of what's going on. It helped me narrow down my issue to a bad distributor after replacing a few other parts. My codes were a bit "vague" on what was going on. Not the code readers fault, it just wasn't an issue where it threw a code that said "YOU HAVE A BAD DISTRIBUTOR" I had to figure that out with the provided codes my blazer was throwing. I'm in Illinois and all of the big box auto parts places here will do the same test for you for free and print out the results...Its then up to you to decipher whats going on with your vehicle. I could also use this to clear my codes and check engine light for a fresh start at seeing what's going on when the new codes started popping up. For the price it helped me quite a bit

Worth having when the check engine light goes on in your older car
My daughter's 2003 Subaru was getting check engine lights on the dash, and I wanted to be sure there was really not a problem. The U480 is a great unit for the money - just plug it in, follow the instructions in the handbook, look up any OBD-2 codes that are present. In the case of my daughter's Subaru it turned out to be a bad gasket on the gas cap. Most of the codes you might encounter are in the booklet that comes with the U480, and if you get one that is not it is easy enough to look it up on the internet. For the money, I can't believe how well this works - wish they had something like the OBD-2 system when I started working on cars, would have saved me a lot of time. Worth getting just to be sure that a check engine light is not a warning of something serious. I have a mechanic friend that has a $2000+ Snap-On unit, and he says other than having the codes on an internal file (no need to look them up) they do the same thing. If you drive an older (but post 1996) car, you are going to need one of these sooner or later. Also nice that you can erase codes without having to disconnect-reconnect the battery.

Cheaply constructed, but does the job
I own a 2001 Toyota Highlander, and have grown tired of getting charged for code reading at my nearby mechanic. Thanks to this inexpensive device, I can now easily diagnose check engine alerts myself. For this reason alone, I am happy with my purchase. The device runs on power drawn from the car, and so requires no batteries. The absence of any internal power system is part of the reason for the extremely light weight of the device, but the build is still very cheap. I've used it myself a few times, and have loaned it to a few friends to check out their vehicles, and so far there has been no issue pulling up codes to research online. If you aren't nearby a mechanic or auto parts store that will diagnose check engine codes for free, this will pay for itself with one use or less.

For the money, you can't go wrong.
Package came on time and as expected in new condition with adequate packaging.Item works properly and as described.Pros: Great price, gives you readings of check engine lights, let's you clear codes.Cons: Navigation within the device is a little weird and takes getting use to, codes are generic and have to be referenced in the provided book and then probably online. Conclusion: For the price you can't go wrong. After getting use to the controls you can simply connect it up, pull the code, look up the problem online in reference to your vehicle and then delete the code if needed. Other devices cost substantially more just to give the exact problem and solution within the device. Let's face it though, you will eventually be online looking up the problem anyways. You might as well save the money for your repairs.
