Little Red Gliding Hood

Clever fractured fairy tale both kids and adults will enjoy!
I enjoyed hearing and reading fairy tales as a child, but I LOVE reading clever fractured fairy tales and sharing them with kids as an adult.Lazar’s creative LITTLE RED GLIDING HOOD title and Cummings’ colorful Candy Land-esque illustrations drew me in right away. This fractured fairy tale features a skating competition which pairs Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf, both wanting to win and replace their “worn-in and worn-out” skates. Puns and other fabulous language like “swizzled and twizzled” and “willowy waltz jumps” delight the ear as well as the detailed, digital illustrations that serve up a rich feast for the eyes on every layout. Two of the best aspects of this story for me are the multi-ethnic cast and the humor woven throughout the dialogue and detailed illustrations. For example, Little Red says, “Little pigs, little pigs, let me in!”, eliciting a shoulder tap from the Big Bad Wolf who deadpans, “Excuse me, I think that’s my line.” Similarly, the wolf’s arrival to the competition elicits mayhem on the faces of Mother Goose characters in a humorous spread. The ending dialogue wraps up the story nicely with a nice play on words from the original story. A fun, visually stimulating and entertaining book that children and adults will enjoy reading again and again!

Oh Slippery Slush
Poor Little Red, her skates have seen better days, she simply must win the skating competition in order to fund her new skates. But where o where, can Little Red find a partner. Granny suggest The Ginger Bread Man, but who can catch him, the bears are already spoken for by that goldy girl and the little pigs are, well, who knows as the Big Bad Wolf turned up before she could ask them. Its not until and unfortunate accident with a skate, does Little Red realize, just how much she has misjudged the Big Bad Wolf. But not everyone is appreciative of The Big Bad wolf's appearance on the ice. Luckily Little Red is there to defend him, and with a great deal of swizzling and twizzling, the unlikely pair are named the winners. With more nursery rhyme characters than you can swing a cat at, this delightfully fractured tale will sure to please the big kids as well as the little kids. Our favorite line hands down has to be "oh slippery slush." That is never going to get old in our house, but I imagine our enjoyment of this book will last for many years to come.

One of our favorite fractured fairy tales
This book is fun before it even starts (with a prologue before the title page)! Lazar uses lyrical language to and a hilarious cast of characters to shatter everything we knew about Little Red and show us a modern take of this tale.As always, Lazar's humor shines. My favorite? The sizzling and twizzling across the ice. Red and who? You'll have to read it to believe it.
