Monsters in the Dark (Billy and the Mini Monsters)

Helping my Son Read Longer Books
My son picked this book up off the table where our local Usbourne affiliate was exhibiting. He was 5 at the time and he loves to read, can read well above his age, but wasn't a big fan of longer books. So when he showed interest in this book, we were thrilled. I think it's because it's about monsters. Unfortunately, I lost her card, so we ended up getting the book from Amazon. The book does just what it's supposed to do, get kids into reading. There aren't too many words per page, and there's lots of pictures so the book feels friendly. The comic book style insertions are also really great for making it easy to read. Mind, I'm still reading the books to him, but he reads along and sometimes I catch him looking at them by himself! It's about monsters, which kids love, and I appreciate (and I think this is British vs. American thing) that there isn't a clear strong moral purpose to the book. A lot of American kids books start from a moral or emotional center. There's some of that here (sticking together, helping friends), but basically it's about the monsters getting into trouble and Billy going on adventures. That makes it very appealing to kids.Overall, I highly recommend this book as a sort of gateway to reading longer chapter books.

Perfect!
Absolutely love these books. We have struggled to find books that interested my 7 year old son, until these books. He really enjoys reading them. We have found the words just perfect for his reading ability (year 2) words he is confident with but also words that challenge him. Cant recommend these enough!
