A Standing Ovation and Emmys for Cudlitz, Hatosy & King
....I just thought I'd offer this since, as we know, it's never going to happen. And it should have happened.I've followed this show from the beginning, always watching the seasons on DVD after they aired. I've followed the mismanagement on the part of the stations that aired the series, shuffling it from place to place like an unwanted child; the mismanagement on the part of those who created and sold the DVD's, packaging and repackaging seasons so I had to buy some of them twice; and ultimately, mismanagement on the part of those who decided this show wasn't worth renewing. And through it all, the one constant has been the quality of the show itself, the remarkable performances, writing and cinematography. Within the range of five remarkable seasons, this Fifth and Final Season was, for me, the very best. Yes, this season is the most graphic in terms of everything from language to imagery to subject matter; but the payoff was there for me, episode after episode without a single exception. Of how many seasons of how many shows can one say that about?? Not many."Southland" has always been a difficult show. Each episode thrusts the viewer into any number of situations without prior explanation, without explicit tie-ins to previous storylines or neat packaging of new ones. But I believe that was intentional, as it reflects the reality faced by inner city police officers on a daily basis. So it took five or ten minutes to get acclimated to each episode, not unlike the way it takes ten or fifteen minutes each time you pick up a novel to continue reading. But like the reading of a really good book, the rewards are far greater than that of disposable junk that doesn't take any effort. So "Southland" is gone, while "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" goes into its (eighth? ninth?) season without an end in sight. If you're reading this, you probably followed "Southland" too. But if you didn't, and if you're wondering if this season or series is worth buying on DVD, I would say a resounding yes--with a caution that you're in for a wild ride, and in the end, your heart is going to be broken, half by the characters you'll surely care about, and half by those in the television industry who didn't let them continue.

Does TV Get Any Better?
I've watched every episode since this show started. NBC cut it after less than a dozen shows, but they cut everything that is really good. This show portrays the routine and the terrifying without holding back. Its gritty, seems more realistic than other shows about law enforcement and depicts the personal struggles of each character. For many people it is shocking to see how a great number of people treat the police, but for me, having worked for a federal public land management agency as a career I'm not at all surprised. When the show began there were three times as many characters and it made for a very fast and even nerve racking show, just like it should be. Now there is just a core of characters from the old show, but the watching it is still riveting. There is little to watch on TV anymore as the game and unreality drivel shows fill the schedule. On Wednesday nights The Americans, Chicago Fire and Southland are all on at the same time. The Americans and Southland are possibly the best shows on right now, which leaves me no choice but to buy each Southland episode on Amazon as my wife wants to watch The Americans on TV and not the computer and doesn't want to watch Southland because it is very gritty. Each episode is definitely worth the $2 to see. I may have to buy all five seasons of this series one of these days.

SouthLAnd Season anything is amazing
I own all seasons of SouthLAnd and my ONLY complaint is that TNT does not order enough episodes of this amazing drama series. In my opinion this series is the most critically acclaimed yet under-rated show on TV. I appreciate the fact that TNT picked it up when NBC dropped the ball, but it seems to me that right from the start they have not really backed it the way that they back their own "home grown" series (Rizzoli & Isles, Major Crimes ect) They have not promoted it nor do they order enough episodes, not to mention the 13 month wait between Seasons 4 and 5. The low ratings I believe have NOTHING to do with the quality of this show. It is simply that it's not promoted & viewers are not aware of it.SouthLAnd is fast paced yet it brings you into the center of each of the characters lives allowing you to become attached and enthralled and before you know it you are hooked and you are salivating for more at the end of each episode. The storylines are amazing. The accuracy of how a beat cops life in LA is spot on and it is gritty, real, cerebral, emotional and compelling. This show, it's writers, Michael Cudlitz (Officer John Cooper) and Regina King (Det. Lydia Adams) all are well overdue for Emmys.Cudlitz is AMAZING.

Great acting
There has always been an immediacy to this series as if you’d joined the officers for a ride along. The principal characters are two detectives and two sets of beat cops. One of the strengths of the show has always been the fact that these are no cut-out figures but real people with real life-issues who perform their duties despite them. These are not idealized figureheads. There are continuing story-lines rather than unconnected episodes. With the last episode it is obvious the writers knew the show had been cancelled as everyone reaps the world wind in one cataclysmic climax. It has always been the mark of a great actor to me that I fail to recognize that he/she is the one playing a part. In the early seasons of Southland C. Thomas Howell played Lydia’s detective partner Russell who nearly died of wounds received on the job and quit the force rather than take a desk job. It was not until he was identified in a supplement on Disc 2 that I realized he was the actor playing the wrinkled, wisecracking, buffoon Dewey in later seasons. Russell makes an appearance in the final episodes meaning the make-up department was very busy.
