The Rider-Waite Tarot Coloring Book

Caveat Emptor!
First of all, I was really excited about this coloring book. I'm a student and an artist and I enjoy coloring for relaxation. I also love the Tarot, especially the Rider-Waite deck. The photographs in the description looked a bit crude, but I thought perhaps they did not represent well on the website. So, the book arrived. I hate giving anything a bad review, but this book was not what I expected. Attached are photographs of the Ten of Swords page from the book. Thick lines and 'digital' marks are exaggerated on the darker pages, but this heaviness of blocking severely inhibits the artist's range of expression. Some of these pages leave absolutely no room for sensitivity. These photographs illustrate how I tried to modify the heaviness with a Sakura Gelly Roll Bright White gel pen. After several applications (white gel ink and spray fixative) I began to color. These flaws were difficult, if not impossible, to conceal. I might add that the process ate up an entire evening. As you can see, I used the actual Tarot card from my deck as a guide. The final project was achieved after layers of Sakura gel ink, spray fixative, Derwent Inktense colored pencils and all-purpose colored pencils. This paper is not sturdy enough to hold moisture, so moistening the Inktense pencils to achieve depth of color was done sparingly, with a damp cotton ball. I have included a couple of examples of my freehand artwork, so the potential buyer can appraise my artistic criticism for him or herself. I think this kind of a Tarot coloring book is an excellent aid for anyone who wants to study, learn and meditate on the Tarot, but it could be done in a better way. This book was not worth what I paid for it, but after futzing with it, I obviously cannot return it. I have a lot of coloring books, for example, a Geography Coloring book and an Anatomy Coloring book, and none of them have these issues, not even old coloring books purchased at bookstores. I've even got a presidential coloring book I got at the Smithsonian Institute twenty years ago and it didn't have issues like this. Hopefully, the author/publisher will revise this work, because I do not think it does the Tarot justice. All in all, very disappointing. BTW, I apologize for the upside-down photos; I'm an artist, but not very technically talented. Sorry about the photographs; I'm not very good with computers and after trying to rotate them I can't get them to appear correctly. I hope they help explain what I felt was wrong with this book.

Good way to learn tarot symbolism and color at the same time!

This is the new, updated version of the book.
This book has been edited since the last review. The images are crisper. You still shouldn't use multiple layers of markers because the pages will get soggy, but coloring pencils work well. The Rider-Waite tarot book is naturally primitive - just as the original illustrator intended it. The coloring pages are one-sided and are on the right hand side of the page now. The book is small - 6x9, so it is easy to color while commuting and it fits in a purse or satchel.

Perfect learning tool for young and not so young
I am so completely happy with this book. The cover is exactly as shown. The pages are not numbered but basically, as you open it, the left sheet has a black and white image of the essential context of each tarot card. Much of the background from the actual tarot are omitted but the essence of the image is presented in a colouring book style. The right side of each page is blank which allows for note taking or pasting your own images. This is completely perfect for my daughter to use in her studies because of it's simplicity. The book itself is 15 cm x 23 cm which is a great travel size, fits in her magickal tool kit and will be a great gift for her little hands. I may just buy another for my other daughter and one for me, too. Awesome and well-priced!

Esperaba algo mejor.
