The Calling of Emily Evans is about one of the first women to take up a ministry, and start a frontier church. The setting is poorly described, leaving you to wonder where on earth she is. Her actions and beliefs are not motivated by much more than being obedient. She tries to argue religion, to win over a non-believer, but her reasoning is sketchy, and she only wins the argument because the author wants her to. Worst of all, whenever she gets in a dilemma, a man comes to her rescue. If you want to read a book about a liberated woman who can think logically, take action in the face of trouble, and still base her actions on faith in God, I recommend Stars Shine After Dark by Paula Hrbacek. This is a contemporary story, but it has the same sweet romance, Christian values, and yet the woman can solve her own problems.
