Yup that’s what I used it for. Read write speeds and heat dissipation are good enough for this. IMO easiest way to do this is with virtual box.

Will this work with ipad mini 5 running os14?

It only works with the iPad Pro with the usb C port all other ios devices will not work. If your device has a lightning port it will not work. Only USB C.

Does it require a password to use it? I am older and passwords are difficult for me. I need this to move files to a new laptop.

It is not required...it can be set up to use a password, but I just use it as plug and play. It comes with cables for plugging into both usb c and usbA slots, making that easy to do on my phone, old desktop and laptop. Neither android nor windows 10 have had any issues recognizing it.

Good price for a good external SSD

Much smaller than I expected. Not to be exact. but it's like 1 inch x 3 - 4 inches. I got it in sale for less than $70. I use it for video files. Happy with it so far.

one side is glass

none of the pictures showed that one side was glass or the carying bag+cords but it does everything it says it does. it gets over 200mbos on a laptop that shouldn't be able to get that fast.
