Good...but also terrible.
My son loves graphic novels. He's seven. My four year old daughter is following in his footsteps. We bought a copy of The Sisters #5 because she picked it out when we took them to a comic book store. There is evidence that raising a reader involves accepting whatever they want to read. Ok. Except then I noticed that it seems to be written by a dude. Weird. Weird that a man is writing about the dynamics between two sisters, but whatever it could still be done well, right? Then as I was reading it aloud to her I noticed that every one of the older sister's friends is drawn with a Barbie type body, and breasts are quite the feature. Why is this necessary in a children's series??? I'm sharing some photos as a visual aid. Both of my kids are into the book. They are charming characters and the scenarios are realistic (although sometimes the jokes are weak and/or I don't get them) but I'm pretty disgusted. I went back and found that in fact it’s illustrated by seemingly another dude. I would venture a guess this person draws cartoon porn as a side hustle. Fine! Bottom line is that it doesn’t really matter the gender of the author/artist, but I don’t know why bodies need to look like this in a children’s series. While I won't throw them out on principle (I had already ordered another before cracking the spine - mistake) I'm planning on giving both kids a lesson on realistic bodies and steer their eyes in another reading direction. People need to see real people depicted in media. Period. This is very disappointing.
