What screw type is used to tighten the collars, and would I need a certain type of wrench to tighten them?

No tools needed. The bolt comes with a T handle welded to it. The handle is 3 inches in length and 1/2 inch in Diameter so you have a good area of grip to tighten the collar. Respectfully David Dennis Head Gorilla @GorillaStrengthUSA

How much weight will these hold? I'm thinking about using these for a chain yoke. Will these hold 500+ pounds each?

They are solid. I have used them to hold 605 for my deadlift workout, 405 on barbellrows and 305 axel clean. They have not budget and hold in place. With that being said they shold holdup. This guy has taken his time to make them and they are quality. I'm actually going to order another pair with a custom modification.

Can these also be used as collars?

Yes. They are worth the money, great quality, and what you're looking for in regards to adding chains to your wod or using as stand alone collars. I will purchase these again.

I have a bar a little wider than an Olympic bar. Are these collars snug or do they have a little play room?

There is a bit of play room, requiring the screw to cinch it in place.
