The Golden Rule: Deluxe Edition

In these troubling times “The Golden Rule” is a good reminder to children and adults alike.
Three things I love about this book: it is a story of a boy and his grandfather - not may children’s books feature a boy. The grandfather shows how the Golden Rule is interpreted in all the worlds major religions. Lastly, the illustrations are outstanding.

Timeless story, Fantastic illustration!
I was searching for all the books that Gabi Swiatkowska illustrated that were available at our library. This one just resonated with us. I'd like to own ALL her books but this is a great start. My daughter is a precocious 5.5, yet the stories were thought provoking and can be reread and rediscussed for a long time as we all know. I loved that they have tried to interpret all the religion's spin on the "Golden Rule". Especially since American public schools now tend to dilute out all religion, or faith, whereas I'd prefer inclusion of all. The illustrations are once again fantastic and add mystery and interest to all of the interpretations respectfully.

Excellent reminder of how to treat others
This book should be read by all children and parents regardless of religious preference. A basic principle by which we should all lead our lives. Reaching out to others should be one of our core activities. This book has pictures, references all faiths and is easy to understand. We, parents as well as children, need this reminder constantly. We have given this book to all our grandchildren and was well received by our children who will read this to them. The world would be more peaceful if we lived by this code.

A Beautiful and touching Book which conveys deep, universal values.
I liked the beautiful written words which presented these honorable, respectable , widespread human values. The book was also beautifully and touchingly illustrated. The book is a gem, in my opinion.

Four stars, but...
The illustrations in this book are simply phenomenal. Almost dreamy and beautiful to look at over and over again. The story is a good moral tale to tell your children. What can anyone find wrong with The Golden Rule? It's of course how we all should aspire to live. That said, I do agree with some of the other reviewers that the inclusion of the various religious rules within the story itself bogs it down and gets a bit repetitive. My kids get the glazed eyed thing going during that part of the story. It would have been enough to leave it at, "Whatever their religion, people find the idea of the Golden Rule in their holy books, Grandfather said."Now, I'm not saying that the references to religion should have been excluded entirely, merely that the inclusion of them in the authors note at the end of the book would have been sufficient to provide an opportunity to continue the discussion with your children.

This is a great book.
We really like Gabi Swiatkowska's illustrations. We have almost all of the books she has worked on. Our child has loved Infinity And Me since she was about 6 months. The stories are always good, too. This one is just right for our family. This book opens up subjects that I want to talk with my child about.

I love that's its multicultural
I always use this as my first read aloud for the year with my 6th graders. It's our only classroom rule. I love that's its multicultural, which really sticks with the students. They write a short pledge to follow it and give an example that stays up all year long. I also hang it from the ceiling with fishing wire as a constant reminder.

The content is spot on
I loved the book. I don’t think it should be for kids alone to be honest. It should be for everyone. Like the book says, treat others as you want to be treated. It’s about character building. It all starts from “ME & YOU”. I would recommend it to any anyone. My child loved it and has asked me to get more books like this.

A Beautiful book that teaches an important lesson
A lovely, lovely book. Cites examples from the Hindu, Jewish, Indigenous, Christian and Muslim traditions. Told as a conversation between a Grandfather and his Grandson. A book we will re-read to our child for years to come. I found the artwork beautiful and a nice contrast to other more conventionally illustrated children’s books.

Good moral, a bit ineffectively descriptive
Good moral, a bit disengaging (boring) to read to younger kids (my 7 year old son liked it but didn’t want to read it again!)
