Through archival photos and his own stunning imagery captured during 35 years of diving experience off the California Coast, Shargel illustrates a little-known chronicle of human use and human impact upon the life in Monterey Bay. Yesterdays Ocean: A History of Marine Life on Californias Central Coast, tells stories of fish from sharks to sardines, creatures from abalone to sea otters and more.Since before the Mission era, Californians have depended on their ocean for food, jobs, and recreation. The use of marine life has rarely been planned, and only recently have we begun to understand the resulting ecological consequences. Shargels newest publication, Yesterdays Ocean, sheds light on this obscure history, revealing hidden links between human history, marine ecology, regulatory politics, and regional economics.Living Sea Images is now able to offer printed copies of Yesterday's Ocean: A History of Marine Life on California's Central Coast to the general public. Printed copies have previously been available only to people involved in marine policy or marine education. Marc Shargel is the author of three previous coffee table books on the life beneath Californias Coastal ocean. His Wonders of the Sea series is a lavishly illustrated, beautifully printed collection that has delighted everyone from kindergarteners to Californias highest elected office-holders. His books take readers on a visual voyage beneath the Pacific. Shargels energetic speaking style has entertained university students, scuba clubs and visitors to aquaria from San Diego to San Francisco. In 2013 he presented a talk at TEDx in Monterey, based on the information in Yesterdays Ocean. Shargel has been an advocate for marine protected areas for over 15 years; from 2004 to 2006 he served on a state panel that mapped out new marine reserves and other areas along the Central California Coast.
