Historical fiction
I really enjoyed this book. Well written with compelling characters. I don't know if it is a category or not but I classify this as Historical fiction. It allows the reader to read about historical truth with a fictional story and characters alongside.

A War Too far
Very interesting. Need to do some research to see how authentic it is. Never heard of a C-47 referred to as a C-3, but perhaps it was.

back story material
At 65, I grew up with the Vietnam war (the American one). I read and understood the big picture from our point of view. It gives another point of view and had Washington been a bit more forward thinking, this region would have turned out very differently indeed.

Good story
What a great prequel to what we know as the Vietnam War with great characters and relation to historical events. Many varied viewpoints through the many characters.

First Book
Just finished the first book. It took a day and a half to read it. It really pulls you in especially if you have an interest in the US involvement in Viet Nam. Look forward to the next in the series.

Not as historically accurate as it should be.
If it wasn't advertised as historical fiction this would be an interesting read. Two mistakes jumped out at me and left a bad taste. There is a reference to the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in the story. The reference is made by a crewmember on the B-29 Bockscar as it headed to Nagasaki on 9 August. The Navy did not release information about the sinking of the Indianapolis until 15 August. (Most Americans never heard of the tragic sinking of the Indianapolis until the movie Jaws came out thirty years later.) It feels like the author is just throwing historical references into the mix. The chapter on the bombing of Nagasaki also has little to do with the rest of the story. The second mistake is the death of Colonel Dewey, the commander of the OSS team the story centers on. The book has him killed in Hanoi. Colonel Albert Peter Dewey was killed in Saigon at the end of the war. He was never in Hanoi. Information on a major character should be historically accurate. Col Dewey is considered the first American killed in the Vietnam War. The book was interesting and I will read the second in the series. Hopefully there will be no more historical inaccuracies.

Late WW2 activity Vietnam
Having served in Vietnam this review of history surrounding the end of WW2 and the French involvement though fiction the story was very good. Certainly the writer understood and resourced information from the period and wrote a plausible course of events. Very enjoyable book that brought back memories of my time in Vietnam.

I learned a lot about what was going there after WWII that I had no idea about. Very well done.

Interesting read
Enjoyed the fictionalising of real time war events. Excellent construction and story line places different perspective on the future American involvement 20 years later
