will the canon 1.4 extender work with lens?

Yes. But the lens must first be extended to 300mm before it will fit. The effect of the 1.4 extender is to give you another 200mm of reach (500mm x 1.4 = 700mm). But you lose a couple of f-stops when you use the extender so minimum aperture goes up to f-11 or so. Not a good combination for use in low-light situations but it is great for wildlife, etc., with adequate lighting.

Does this come with instructions and warranty card? No paper at all in the one I received.

Mine came with no warranty card, no manual, no lens cap, no case, and not in its original packing - just the lens and hood loosely packed in a box for a different lens (Canon 70-200 2.8), which makes me think I got a used lens that had been returned. Amazon has lost me as a customer.
