Nelson's Sailors- Key to victory.
Excellent illustrations with good commentary. An essential part to a period's library.

Very Good.
The Osprey Books always provide an excellent summary. It doesn't go into exhaustive detail, but it doesn't need to. It is a very good starting point for anyone interested in the British Navy of this era. Many folks are only interested in the officers, but it was the Able Seamen who got things done.

Disappointing
The book simply reinforces old stereotypes about Nelson's sailors. They were not half starved, frequently flogged and poorly served by the surgeons. For example, the surgeons are condemned for cutting off limbs carelessly, crudely and quickly. However, amputation was often needed and had to be done in 90 seconds, or less, to avoid the lethal "shock" syndrome. Also, the surgeons had large amounts of laudanum in stock and most of the injured would be heavily dosed with this opiate to kill pain and struggling -- also important for a good outcome. Quite disappointing.

Useful as a companion to the Patrick O'Brian series
Well done, good info and artwork. I would use it a companion to the "Aubrey and Maturin" series for visuals.

Nothing is missing
This simple little book contains more valid information than all the larger ones I own on the subject put together.

Good reference on a lesser known subject
Good reference book and well thought out. I'd recommend it for modelers and history buffs.
