Well organized, well-illustrated collection of road bike know-how reviews help prevent bad purchases
Update 7-2-2018: First, before reading my review of this book you need a little perspective on the review writer. I was a total novice who could not have pointed to a cog or a chaining on my very own bike. It is amazing to me that any book could lift me out of bicycle ignorance and place me solidly on a path to knowing my bike.My goal of becoming knowledgeable about my 23-speed Tommaso road bike is too much for my old brain to grasp quickly so I’m finding this well organized, well-illustrated collection of road bike know-how to be a near-perfect resource for me.So far, after a quick scan of this impressive paperback, I have found two gold nuggets. One is the section called PRERIDE INSPECTION in the chapter named BASIC STUFF (Ch. 2) in which 16 steps are provided for making sure your road bike is road ready before heading out for that long trail ride. The second is the entire chapter 5, which is titled CABLE-ACTUATED SHIFTING SYSTEMS. Knowing how to adjust the shifting system for optimal performance is almost as critical to me as braking but far more mysterious. After having studied just these two sections of the book, it is clear to me this book is a real find and an excellent value (at just over ten bucks) for anyone using a bike with cable-actuated gearing.---original review---I am starting my rating at three stars even though it has not arrived yet because I am disappointed that it is not available in digital form. Digital format facilitates searches, and I anticipate searching for terms a lot in this book. Digital also facilitates readers with vision issues. But after the resoundingly positive reviews, I look forward to making this the center piece of my new bike repair library.

Excellent Resource
In depth resource, clearly written and lavishly illustrated! A pleasure just to read. Have already consulted this manual for help in putting on new tires, adjusting my front and rear brakes, and properly cleaning and lubricating my chain on my Trek Hybrid. This is just the beginning, as I feel confident I can gradually assume all levels of maintenance as this is so comprehensive yet user friendly. Good for beginners and more seasoned folks. Awesome job Lennard Zinn (plus it makes me want to go dig out my 30 year old copy of you know what :).I did take it to Kinko’s and for $5.58 got it spiral bound. This means it will lay flat as I use during repairs, always handy.

Good and Instructive Book
I have borrowed a previous edition of this book from my public library several times over the past year. I was waiting for the newest edition (5th) to be released before buying my very own. I'm still very much a beginner when it comes to any sort of bike repair/maintenance. I have been able to learn some basic maintenance skills to cut down on trips to my local bike shop. The book describes the basic tools one should have for their own use and seeing as it has been a little bit of buying a tool only when absolutely needed, I can stay within my budget. This book is easy to use and organized so that it's fairly simple to find exactly what you're looking for. It's instructions are clear and the illustrations are quite helpful. If I use this in conjunction with some of the instruction videos found on YouTube, it helps me to feel more confident in gradually improving my mechanic skills.

Great book, but get with the times!
This is already a very useful book just from going through the basic maintenance section. Everything is very thoroughly explained and has wonderful diagrams that really show you what they're talking about if the words alone don't help. My ONLY gripe is WHY ISN'T THERE A DIGITAL VERSION? Velopress' explanation for this on their site isn't very good. I refuse to believe any modern press wouldn't save their books digitally. But whatever. There are enough interesting diagrams that it actually serves as a decent coffee table book as well.

More than anyone should know about road bikes.
All I can say is wow, this guy knows his stuff when it comes to bikes. Helped immensely with my overhaul on an old bike so I could get back into riding my bike. I literally tore my old bike down piece by piece, cleaned and repaired what I could and replaced many parts that had too much wear. This book has so much detail and great pictures that I didn’t have any stress at all during the rebuild. Used to be stressed working on a bike but this book answered any question I could have had without having to consult a bicycle mechanic. Without it I could have never successfully ordered the right parts the first try. Actually has more info than I could even need.

Pictures are great!
This is a well written handbook with great pictures. It helps describe basic tasks so I can do them. And it helps me speak the language at the bike shop when I decide I don’t want to do my own repair.

This book is a MUST for shade tree bike mechs. Easy to follow and understand. Very well written.
I can not say enough how great this book it. Worth double what you pay on AMAZON. Using just this book I have built 2 of my dream bikes. One Lynskey Sportive, and a SOMA FogCutter gravel bike. The Lynskey is a Shimano compact 11sp and the gravel/commuting bike is a SRAM 1x11 set up. Both are disk brakes. I read thru this to assist me in picking parts, making adjustments, and I have photocopied out specific pages with torque requirements that I go back to often when doing re-greases or other services. If you have just a normal level of mechanical ability and are able to follow instructions that have pictures for reference then you will love being your own mechanic. For shade tree bike mechs this book is for US!

If you can wait, then wait.
So, I'd like to preface by stating that this book is great. It provides detailed information and pictures for reference. It covers different kinds of bikes, the tools needed to maintain them, and how to install parts and troubleshoot problems. Truly a thorough explanation of nearly everything for any kind of rider. Wth that being said, everything I have learned about maintaining my bike has been from youtube channels. Ive had it for a year and used it one time when I was researching parts and building my first bike. I will undoubtably use it again when I attempt a second build for an entirely new form of riding. Great to have lying around and very clutch in the moment when you need it.

Monumentale e chiarissimo.

465 pages of relatively timeless education
A very comprehensive, informative and well laid-out guide that provides diagrams of each mechanism in a 'Haynes Manual'-style format that is both well labeled, easy to read, understand, and refer to whilst reading or tinkering. There is an introductory section listing and explaining all the tools it recommends for the level of work you want to undertake yourself (depending on your budget, workspace and commitment). I'm confident that once I invest in the correct tools and invest my time in following these guides, I'll be gratuitously proficient in bike mechanics and confident in my aspiration to cycle to Greece without crying. FYI, there are 465 pages, its rather dense. Includes sections on wheel-building and even on-the-go kit recommendations!
