First time trying to crochet, would this be good for a baby blanket? How many skeins should I purchase?

It would work very well for a baby blanket but remember it is a lace weight yarn (fine 1). It will most likely work best with a needle E or F. Just make sure your pattern is compatible with a finer yarn. I would estimate a baby blanket to take around 8 to10 skeins. Blankets eat up the yarn. This is one of the softest yarns I have used and is beautiful crocheted or knitted. Best of luck on your project!! Great to have another fellow crocheter.

How many I need to make a coat for one year old baby

The yield on these skeins is as advertised. I would imagine 3-4 would make a baby coat.

I've never seen a sport-weight yarn with 237yds/50gms. Double checking that this is correct as claimed?

It is more like Dk or lace weight.
