Does this use the international standard ink cartridges?

No. Cartridges for Hongdian pens have a slightly larger bore (internal diameter) than the international standard. If you push really hard, you can get some IS cartridges (Watermans) on a Hongdian pen. If you want to use cartridges, recommend buying the Hongdian cartridges https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08259HPC7 - the ink writes well. However, they do ship with a fillable piston converter that works extremely well.

You don't need a second converter. You just need to practise washing the pen before changing to a different ink. If you use the same ink, you should still wash the pen every couple of months, depending on usage. Just fill the pen with tap water and pump it out again. repeat until the water is clear in the converter. Then take out the converter and leave the converter and nib to dry. In dry places, a day or two would suffice. some pen users leave the nib in a small basin of water over a day. This is a good excuse to buy a second pen.
