Can i use this to test homemade hard cider?

Yes it will work fine if all the sugar has been fermented out or the cider has been distilled. If the cider tastes sweet, the instrument will not read accurately. You should take your readings before you add sugar to sweeten. A triple scale hydrometer might be better, so that you know what your Original Gravity (OG) reading was and what your Final Gravity (FG)was. If you started with 14% sugar OG and you now have 0% sugar (FG) you have made 14% alcohol.
