The expansion range of the base clamp is 0.4 -1.5", so a desk surface's thickness has to be within this range in order to fit this product. Please check out product photo# 5 for details regarding this information

Will the clamp hold on a vertical surface instead of horizontal like the examples and pics show?

The holder expansion range is 4.5-7.5 inches, so the bracket holder clamps onto the side which has measurement within this range.
