a large fits a waist 34-36 with a height of 5'11-6'1 an XL fits waist 36-38 height 6'1-6'3 XXL waist 38-40 height of 6'3-6'4

i'm 6'4" @315 and used the xxl and they work fine. there are draw strings, so they can be cinched up. i'd imagine the xl will work just fine for him assuming the sizing chart is in line with most others like it Lisa F.hope this helps. -michael
