Finally!!!
Jeremy Ford is a Teacher. He knows the questions before they are asked. This is an excellent book for beginners. I have at least 6 pastel books I ordered on Amazon. They all had great reviews but none have helped me better than Mr. Fords. I loved this book so much I ordered his watercolor book as well

Excellent, Helpful Book.
An excellent book on working with Pastels. One can learn much from the teachings of Jeremy Ford by reading this book...and of course, working every day on your own pastel work. You learn by working and keeping at it.The contents tell you what papers to use, blending tools, how to do underpainting using alcohol which is very popular today, what materials to use, tell you about usig color and form, chapters on painting snow, varied elements of the landscape such as doing reflections, trees, waterfalls, creating depth or distance, perspective, blending or not blending,....ways of applying pastel to the surface paper or board, ...... to use fixative or not keeping in mind that it does darken your pastel work...creating light at different times of the day, creating a mood and atmosphere and doing skyscapes, How to compose your work using photographs...... And, how to mount and frame your work as well. The demo photographs are very good too.

It gives good information and helpful advice when I do not know ...
This book has been quit helpful to me, a beginning pastelist of a few months. It gives good information and helpful advice when I do not know what to do next. The illustrations are very good. The pastel words are well defined so they are very understandable. It is a wonderful adjunct to the pastel classes that I am attending.

You will never need to buy another pastel painting book!
If like me you have a box of pastels lurking at the back of the cupboard because your attempts at using them just result in a mess, this is the book for you. It is brilliant. There is so much information in it but written in such a way that it is easy to follow, with lots of photographs. It covers all aspects of the landscape including skies, trees, waterfalls, reflections and so much more including step-by-step projects. The other pastel painting books that I had have now gone to the charity shop because they were never opened. This is the only book that I will need.

Fantastic read with practical tips
Having read other Pastel books, I found this one to be most useful in providing practical tips in how to use both Pastels and the tools associated with them. I learnt so much more from reading this book than I did other books. This book is especially useful if you are just starting out with Pastels as it really talks you through how tools can be used.

Theres nothing particularly new or inspirational though and I'm pretty sure if you have other pastel workbooks you'll notice ...
You can read this through in a couple of hours and it's worth the effort if you are a beginner or have done some pastel painting but are struggling with techniques and need a bit of guidance. It covers the very basics and there are several worked through examples to try. Theres nothing particularly new or inspirational though and I'm pretty sure if you have other pastel workbooks you'll notice some remarkably similar scenes....

Very explanatory and informative if you're just starting landscapes
I do pet portraits which is a lot of close and fine detail work but I decided I'd like to branch out into 'countryside backgrounds' for them. This book has been great for that and actually I've now started doing landscapes without the pets!!Always remember though that you need good materials for good results, it just so happens I use the same as the author and my efforts turned out reasonably well.

Ideal first Pastel book or for those with some experience.
Jeremy Ford is one of the best Art Teachers there is. Explains very clearly and simply whatever medium he teaches. There are some lovely pictures in the book which are a joy to look at. His work always appears bright and cheerful. At last after several attempts with pastel I can at last see progress.
