The first illustrated book by one of the worldโs most acclaimed authors, History of Beauty presents an intriguing journey into the wonderful realm of aesthetics, exploring the ever-changing concept of the beautiful from ancient Greece to today with abundant examples. Closely examining the development of the visual arts and drawing on literature from each era, the range of Ecoโs inquiry includes concepts such as the idea of love, natural inspiration versus numeric formulas, and the unattainable woman. In the mold of History of Beauty, On Ugliness is an exploration of the monstrous and the repellant in visual culture and arts. Ecoโs encyclopedic knowledge and captivating storytelling combines in this ingenious study of the ugly, revealing that we often shield ourselves from what weโre most attracted to subliminally. With numerous examples of art, and quotations from the most celebrated writers and philosophers of each age, this provocative book explores in-depth the concepts of evil, depravity, and darkness in art and literature. Review: Great overview on Beauty ideas in History - These two lovely designed books are an exciting transect on art history, following the changing ideas and concepts about Beauty. Plenty of graphical examples are provided in painting and sculpture, and also excerpts from literature and philosophy, illustrating almost each line of Eco's explanation. I found Eco at his best in the Medieval and Renaissance periods. The second volume, On Ugliness, seems a little bit more sketchy than the previous one. Review: Beauty on Eco but not Ugliness - As a fine art practitioner with little knowledge, it was good resource to begin with. This book is one of those recommended resource for art practitioner. It is not complex writing and has clear structure based on the Art history. I read this in library first, my friends highly recommended it and I also thought it was worth buying. And for desertcart, never disappoint the delivery procedure. I received it within two weeks in Australia.

beautiful edition
Eco's intelligent analysis supplements the great art pieces collected under one cover. Since it's the analysis, and not the reproductions, that are the focus of this work, the pictures are often too small to appreciate the detail. You will have to look online, buy another art book, or go to a museum if something catches your eye.
