Can this. pump transmission and engine oil ?

Could I use one of these with a rain barrel

I imagine you could to pump the rain water out. When the hose is too long it does not work that great. So I would say about a foot of hose is the max

There is no direction of rotation molded onto the pump body. Which way is "forward?"

If you take the pump apart you will see the fins are bi-directional and it all depends what setting you have your drill in Forward/Reverse. I will say if you use it in one direction for a while that the fins will where in that way so better to keep you transferring in one direction.
