I was looking for a pill cutter made in the US. Vast majority are not and hard to be sure, based on old reviews, unless the vendor explicitly states where it is made. This was one of them for which a couple of customers said "Made in USA" in their reviews, but those were in 2016-18. The price was suspiciously low, but I purchased it anyway. It is made in Mexico. However, as new it definitely worked better (cutting a 8-mm round tablet consistently in half, leaving just a speck of crumbles) than our old pill cutter from CVS (which actually crushed these tablets). Although I just started to use this cutter, I am giving 5 of 5 (with low cost is a bit of factor), but the seller didn't advertise that it is US made, so not stars taken for made in Mexico! I read that pill cutters need to be replacement more often than I thought. Pill cutters should be replaced when the blade no longer cuts cleanly, which often occurs every 3 to 6 months depending on usage (and some pills have intentionally harder coating), or roughly every 200 cuts. If the cutter is crushing or crumbling tablets rather than creating a clean, sharp split, the blade is dull and should be replaced.

I've used nothing but these ever since I discovered them. Because I have a number of chronic conditions, I take an embarrassing number of pills each day. I'm trying to cut back, so I use this pill cutter more and more often. One pill is very thick and tends to dull the blade more quickly than I'm used to. I like to keep one cutter in use and one spare; still, over roughly five years, I've bought only four. One dulled, one is in use, and one is at the ready as a backup. And one still remains unopened! The pills are held firmly in place as the blade cuts pills effortlessly. I don't foresee buying any other model of pill cutter. EVER. Addendum: After reading reviews with less than four or five stars, I noticed that most have the same complaints //and// the same “fix.” Most report “crushing” or popping out of the back/getting stuck in the apparatus. I’ve had all three happen to me, and they all usually can be avoided by simply //not// squeezing the smaller (usually round) pills too tightly into the open area of the apex. When the pills are squeezed in too tightly, they have no room to “breathe” while being sliced, so there tends to be one half of the pill that winds up being “squished.” Similarly, when being halved, there tends to be at least one of the halves (sometimes both but not usually) that winds up shooting through the opening in the apex — and sometimes the entire apparatus — altogether, or inconveniently getting stuck inside. The tackiness of the material that holds onto the pills is perfect for holding the pills in place while being sliced. Between that, and the see-through heavy-duty plastic, knowing where you’re slicing is optimal. I couldn’t ask for anything better. I highly recommend it. 😉

I bought this pill cutter to cut 90 pills into fourths. Before I reachef the 20th pill, I had already encountered every problem that people complained about in these reviews. * The pill cutter stops opening completely, and if you want to open it fully, you have to push the little flexible plastic shield on the bottom up toward the device. However, even if you don't fix it, it doesn't make it any harder to cut pills or less accurate. * The pill cutter cuts unevenly, but only if you don't position the pill correctly (in orientation, or you don't push it securely into the triangle holder), or you're not using it on a hard flat surface. In other words, this is user error. * The blade does dull very quickly, but that doesn't affect its effectiveness or accuracy. * This pill cutter can crush your pills, but only if you're not using it on a hard flat surface. The only problem that I found that was slightly annoying, was that the cutter left pill dust all over the table underneath it, but it was a minor inconvenience. In each case, the pill cutter still did its job, and was significantly easier than cutting the pills with a knife. All you have to do is place it on a hard, flat surface, and make sure that you push the pill into the top of the triangle until it fits snugly. If you care about the pills being even, then make sure that you line it up evenly. And have a wet washcloth or something to clean up the pill dust afterwards. That's it. It's not perfect, but it's easy, and it works. :)

My mom recently started a medication that needed to be halved (half in the morning and half in the evening). The first few days I tried using a knife to half the tablet (pre-scored round tablet), but it would often break into 4-5 pieces. This product helps us cut the small (metoprolol, beta blocker) pills without crushing them. It is difficult to line the razor up to the pre-scored line, but the guide definitely helps. The small pills are not exactly in half, but they are much closer (probably between 40/60 to 50/50 splits) than I was able to do otherwise. I was able to split one of my dad's Losartan pills (larger) accurately. The space in the front of the product allows me to prepare/store a couple of my mom's halved pills for the next few days. The pills are pretty fragile and this stops them from bouncing around and breaking in a larger bottle. Honestly, having to split pills is not the greatest thing, but sometimes dosages require patients to split pills. I don't think any of the pill splitters out there are perfect. This product is probably as close as you can get to a product to split them accurately/evenly, and its affordable enough that you can have two (one for my mom's pill and one for my dad's) and not have to clean up between them.

Just works. I tried for months using a metal dough cutter, knives, and a razor blade (freeform, not great) ending up with powder and pieces of pills. It would also take me longer to line up the pill, find the right straight-down angle, barricade the area from flying broken bits, and only get a few done at a time. This pill cutter is small, easy to use, and splits my pills evenly. Saves me time and haven't ended up with broken pieces or powder yet. Full context, my pills have an indented line down the middle and are made to be split.

This is a great pill cutter. It's got a razorblade safety sheath that closes upon opening to get your pill (not childproof, just 'cut your finger while inserting/removing your pill' proof), a rubber grip on the top part where you close it so it doesn't slip out of your hand flinging everything on the floor, two flexible arms to semi-help hold your pill before cutting and a little reservoir for tapping the pill residue so it doesn't fall on the table or floor. My only two annoyances are that it could be a bit smaller, but the minus star is mainly for the rubber part that you place your pill on. This part makes the second piece of the rubber grip with the little gripping arms I mentioned earlier. The minor annoyance comes from having to brush the powder away from the rubber grip after each use. What they should have done was slant the entire holding piece downward so the pill doesn't fall out when cutting and kept the flexible rubber arms in order to stable the pill; then they could have eliminated the rubber base that takes a few extra seconds to clean. Still the best pill cutter I've seen on the market though; just short of perfect, that's all. Highly recommended! Happy pill cutting. 07/11/11 Update: After about less than 75 pill splits, the plastic guard broke. So, there's a reason why it's only 3 bucks. That being said, I'd gladly forgo the cheap price and pay 2-3 bucks for a a thin flexible vinyl or other material that would've lasted much longer. I know that this problem was repeatedly shown during product testing and that's part of the reason I reduced the rating. If you can't integrate a feature into a product properly, then you don't add it at all. Product design 101. Oddly enough, it's well worth 3 bucks even without the guard, so why risk ticking so many people off? So, now (if you're reading this post-purchase) if you've gotten to this point, you can take a butter knife and just flick the plastic off of the tabs that whole them in place. You can pull the plastic off from the bottom and steer clear of having to mess around with the razor portion of the cutter. Now, you've turned a somewhat dangerous product around children into a digit reducing device, depending on how curious little jimmy is.

I have used this splitter successfully for pea-sized cholodin pills, tiny zyrtec tablets, equally small Deramaxx tablets, and pretty large (cylindrical and chalky) probiotic pills. There is a small amount of waste, but less than there was when I was using the old knife-on-the-cutting-board process. I highly recommend this splitter. ******UPDATE 2/28/2015****** Sad to report that this pill splitter has bit the dust. I have used it almost daily since it was purchased, and the wide ribbon plastic that causes the upper portion with the blade "spring" up once you've cut the pill is torn. I have no idea what happened to it, I just noticed yesterday that the blade didn't jump up after I cut the pill, and closer inspection revealed the torn plastic. I can still make it work, but it isn't the impressive feat of engineering that arrived on my doorstep in the cute little Amazon.com box. :( Very disappointing. *******UPDATE 8/29/15******* My Apex Ultra Pill Splitter bit the dust for good this time. I attempted to split one too many enteric coated pills and the plastic "hinge" cracked and part of it fell off of the unit. I've been trying to use one of those screw-down pill crushers in lieu of this splitter, but with the high summer humidity, all the crusher did was mash the pill in the bottom of the unit, and I had to dig the thing out and split it on the cutting board with a knife. In other words, even though this Apex Ultra Pill Splitter only worked reliably for a few months, it is better than any other option that I can find on Amazon or at Walgreens. And to be honest, my dog needs to have 5 pills split for him each dinnertime, so maybe my expectations are a bit higher than anything other than a pharmaceutical grade pill splitter can meet.

I've had a lot of pill splitters in my day (I have a lot of chronically ill pets) but this is one of the better ones. (I actually got this for one of my own medications.) This is super easy to operate. The part where you put the pill is a slightly flexible silicone so you can sort of push the sides to get your pill lined up properly. The silicone also helps keep the pill from going flying during or after the cut. While it's open, there's a plastic shield that covers the razor blade so you won't cut yourself. This slides smoothly into and out of place as you operate the splitter. I'm getting nice, clean cuts with this, so I am actually properly dividing my dose of medication in half. There's not a lot of powder or crumbling (although do pay attention to the recommended storage conditions for your medication to help prevent disintegration). What I do is cut the pill in the evening and take one half, then take the remaining half in the morning (as directed by my doctor!) and then I know that I haven't missed any doses. Anyway, this operates smoothly and does everything I need it to, so I'm happy. It's also well made with no cracks or chips in the plastic. The metal blade was in good shape and not rusty. I'd gladly buy the same one again if I had it to do over. Please don't split pills unless recommended by your doctor. Some medications are not designed to be split.

Bueno, bonito y barato. Cortador de buena calidad (made in USA). Perfecto para cortar pastillas en 4 (en mi caso, Fincar 5 mg). Es muy fácil de usar, la pastilla se coloca en el centro (en la "V") y no se mueve por el recubrimiento de goma que trae. Además, es imposible cortarse por el sistema de protección de la cuchilla. Es verdad que hay que separar con los dedos la cubierta inferior de la pastilla una vez cortada, pero no supone ningún problema. Para partir la pastilla en dos, basta con colocarla en el punto indicado y bajar la cubierta superior del cortador. Así de fácil. Ahora, para partir las mitades en dos, al principio hay que tener un pelín de maña para colocarla correctamente en la "V", pero enseguida se acostumbra uno. Muy satisfecho. Actualización 10/01/2017: Efectivamente, como otros usuarios ya han señalado, el plástico protector que impide daños accidentales se ha terminado por romper. El cortador sigue funcionando perfectamente, aunque hay que llevar más cuidado para no cortarse con la cuchilla.

Have been using this for a while now, I must say the blade is holding well. Only improvement is that the pills often go out the back instead of the front, and there is nothing to catch them so they fall out. The technique is to tilt the pill cutter's front lower so that they come out properly
