Peace of Mind
This railnet has been perfect for what my family needs. We live in a split-level house. You walk up half a flight of stairs to our front door, then either up half or down half a flight of stairs depending if you're going to the "basement" downstairs or the living room, kitchen, and bedrooms upstairs. We do have two baby gates in place to keep the little one from being able to fall down the half flight of stairs from our living room to the front door. The back wall of our living room is stair railings to keep people from falling from the living room to the basement hallway.About a month ago while I was work, my wife was home with my 12 month old in the living room she heard him start screaming from the other side of a couch. She jumped up and saw that my 12 month old who weighs over 20 pounds had squeezed himself through the 4 inch stairwell spindles and was jammed by his head with his body hanging toward the basement 8 feet below. She screamed for my older children to come help her get the little guy out. Fortunately, they were able to rotate him and squeeze him out really quick with no injuries.Although I'm still amazed that my little guy was able to squeeze through a 4 inch opening, we knew we had to have a solution until we know he's too big to squeeze his body through. Although there are some negative reviews, I went ahead and bought this railnet.I'm not going to say it looks pretty in my house, but it does everything I need it to do from a safety standpoint. It's well secured to the railing with everything that came in the package. There's absolutely no way, my little guy will ever be able to squeeze through the rails again.

Perfect for an outdoor patio
Let me start off by saying there is probably no way that I would install this inside my house. It is definitely not the most stylish or fancy looking safety net. But for the purpose of an outdoor guard it is perfect. My condo is on the second floor and while I wasn't concerned about my daughter falling through I didn't want to worry about her throwing her toys onto the deck below. I didn't use the hooks and string that came with it because it looked sloppy and was frankly a bit of a pain to install. So I used simple tack nails to tack down the bottom trim to the side of the deck beam and along the top to the rail. The nails are nice and small and won't leave any longterm damage. If you are looking for something a little less 'attached' then the twine they supply would work. All in all a nice cheap solution for a deck toy barrier! Just make sure you get more than one if you have a long deck.... one wasn't enough for me and I need to get another one.

The net itself is fine. There are no useful instructions
The net itself is fine. There are no useful instructions. The net is supposed to be tied to the top rail. The package comes with eye-hole screws, which you're supposed to screw into the base of the railing, or wall, or wherever, and then tie the net to those as well. I ordered 2 packages. One package did not come with the eye-hole screws or ties. Fortunately, I didn't use the screws and half of the ties, not wanting to put holes in our baseboards. We bought some stick-on loops and and zip ties from home depot for a few dollars, and the solution worked great. When the net is too long, you can roll it up, as the "instructions" say, but it doesn't look great. On one net, we had about 5 feet left over. We used a two pieces of white duct tape on either side of the net at the end of our rail and did cut the net. The duct tape worked great, no unraveling.

Looks good, with a little effort!
Don't know yet how this will hold up, but I have high hopes:) The mesh does not seem to be strong enough to withstand cat claws, and I'm fairly sure a determined child could tear it over time, but I think it will be a very effective deterrent.I am writing this review, though, because contrary to what other posters have said, I think it is totally possible to make this look nice, even without buying separate plastic fasteners.I used the eye screws as anchors on the bottom and secured the mesh to itself on top (my banister is short enough that I could drape the mesh over the rail and tie underneath it). I cut the ties in half, using a lighter to melt and seal the frayed ends. With these half-length ties, I used super-tight double knots and then added bows to make them look neater. I also rolled up and tied the excess mesh on either end.

A good option for us
We bought this because we did a home study through an adoption agency and they required baby proofing for our balcony. Our apartment complex is pretty picky about what can be on a balcony but they okayed this and one other option that was not rated for outdoors, so we went with this one. So far so good. We mostly have warm weather here and it's held up to the heat and the rare winds and rains. It's even held up to the birds that like hanging out there to mess with our cat.We took the advice of another reviewer and used cable ties. The strings that come with it definitely seem like an issue waiting to happen. If we had another rail that needed to be baby-proofed, we'd use this again.

Useful and a good value
We were at a vacation rental which was built like in the 70's when building codes were lax and the 2nd floor balcony had child-size gaps. Got a couple of these delivered quickly (Amazon Prime!) and they gave us a peace of mind. Used the string ties only in this case. In a more permanent installation especially if there is a crawling baby involved, securing at the bottom to prevent getting under the netting would be advised. There are a lot of string ties supplied ... it takes a while to set up. Suggest tying the string to the net with a simple knot first before tying to railing/balusters so when you take it down the strings stay in place. We took the nets down and put them in their box and left for future renters who could use them if they wanted to. We heard that the owner appreciated it.

... railing inside our house by the stairs Length is nice, I only needed 6 ft worth but I ...
Got this for my 10 month old whose head could fit thru the railing inside our house by the stairsLength is nice, I only needed 6 ft worth but I just folded the extra 4 ft and wrapped around one end. Had it for a couple weeks, and there is already a tear but I think that is caused by my 4 year old fooling around. Good amount of strings and eye hooks...
